What Was the Lemonade Privacy Settlement About?

Lemonade settled a $4,995,000 class action over allegations that it failed to get required consent when sharing customers' personally identifiable information. The lawsuit accused Lemonade, Inc. of disclosing applicants' personally identifiable information (PII) and protected health information (PHI) to third parties without consent, in violation of state and federal privacy laws. Specifically, the case claimed Lemonade shared the health information of life insurance applicants with third parties.

This settlement is now closed — the claim deadline passed on January 21, 2025. A separate, newer Lemonade case is currently open: the $10.5M Lemonade data disclosure settlement, covering people whose driver's license numbers were exposed through Lemonade's online insurance quote platform between April 2023 and September 2024. Claims in that settlement are open through September 8, 2026.

What Is Lemonade Insurance?

Lemonade Insurance is a technology-driven company that offers renters, homeowners, pet, and term life insurance through an AI-powered, digital-first platform. It is advertised as offering quick sign-ups, transparent policies, and fast claim payouts.

Who Qualified?

Class members were people who accessed lemonade.com, either directly or through www.bestow.com or www.northamericancompany.com, and entered answers to health-related questions on an application for life insurance in the United States between March 15, 2021 and September 28, 2023.

How Much Did Class Members Get?

Class members who filed valid claims were estimated to receive up to $14.86 each. Because payments were made pro rata from the $4,995,000 fund after fees and administration costs, the actual amount depended on how many valid claims were filed.

Was Proof Required?

No documentation was required. Claimants had to attest that they were members of the settlement class and submit a claim form online or by mail by the January 21, 2025 deadline.
