A $1.6 million class action settlement resolved allegations against Saint-Gobain Abrasives, Inc., the manufacturer and marketer of certain Norton-branded abrasive discs, over a claim that the company failed to disclose accurate "best by" or expiration dates on some of the discs. Saint-Gobain denied any wrongdoing.
The covered products were certain Norton-branded sanding or grinding discs used for industrial, commercial, and personal work — common tools for machine tooling, woodworking, masonry, and other hobby or commercial projects.
You qualified if you purchased Norton-branded abrasive discs between June 6, 2017 and February 1, 2024. Covered products included Norton Classic Cutting Discs, Norton Classic Sanding Belts, Norton Gemini Grinding Wheels, Norton Gemini Flap Discs, and Norton Gemini Center Grinding Wheels, among others. The complete list of covered products was published on the official settlement website.
Each class member who elected a Class Payment could receive up to $50, depending on whether proof of purchase was provided:
• With proof of purchase: up to $50 per claim per household, equal to the total purchase value of qualified Norton discs.
• Without proof of purchase: up to $15 per claim per household, at up to $3 per disc for up to five products.
No, proof was not required to file. Claimants without documentation could receive the $15 tier. Those who provided documentation of purchase could receive up to $50.
This was one of several class actions over expiration-date disclosures on bonded abrasive wheels and discs. The newest one is open now:
• Menard PERFORMAX & MASTERFORCE bonded abrasive wheel settlement (open — claim by July 7, 2026)
• $1.25M Milwaukee Tools bonded abrasive wheels settlement (closed)
• $1.9M Freud America "Diablo" bonded abrasive discs settlement (closed)
