What Is the Cash App Data Breach Settlement?

Block, Inc. and Cash App Investing, LLC agreed to a $15 million class action settlement in Salinas v. Block, Inc. and Cash App Investing, LLC, Case No. 4:22-cv-04823, in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California. The lawsuit alleged that the companies were negligent, made misrepresentations, and breached obligations to their users in connection with three central issues:

• A data security incident affecting Cash App Investing, disclosed in April 2022, in which a former employee accessed customer reports containing personal and financial information without authorization.
• A far-reaching data breach disclosed by Block in October 2023.
• Alleged unauthorized and fraudulent withdrawals and transfers of funds, along with issues in Cash App's complaint and error resolution processes.

Block and Cash App Investing denied any wrongdoing, and the settlement was reached without an admission of liability.

Distribution Status Update — June 2026

The settlement received final approval on March 27, 2025, and distribution has continued since:

• Electronic payments began April 10, 2025.
• Paper checks were mailed starting April 20, 2025. Paper checks expire 90 days from the date of issue.
• Over 667,000 claims were filed; approximately 40,380 were approved, totaling about $5.6 million. Many filings were denied as improper, fraudulent, or ineligible.
• The administrator has continued processing stragglers — replacement checks for undeliverable mail and returned electronic payments — with reasonable efforts to resend within 30 days of a return.

If you filed an approved claim and haven't received your payment, check your claim status on the official settlement website. For the month-by-month payment history, see our Cash App settlement payout date update.

Who Qualified for a Payout?

The settlement class covered current and former customers of Cash App, Cash App Investing, or their affiliated companies whose personal information, Cash App account, or Cash App Investing account was accessed without authorization, or who experienced unauthorized or fraudulent withdrawals or transfers of funds. Customers who encountered unresolved errors in a Cash App account or any linked financial account between August 23, 2018 and August 20, 2024 could also qualify.

To receive a payout, class members had to submit a timely, valid claim form by November 18, 2024.

How Much Could Class Members Get?

The $15 million fund covers three categories of compensation, after administration costs, court-approved attorney fees, and service awards:

• Out-of-Pocket Losses: reimbursement for documented expenses caused by the breaches or unauthorized transactions.
• Lost Time: compensation for time spent dealing with the incidents, such as monitoring accounts or communicating with banks.
• Transaction Losses: reimbursement for unauthorized or fraudulent transactions that were never refunded.

Based on the roughly 40,380 approved claims and $5.6 million approved for distribution, the average payout works out to around $200 per claimant, with individual amounts varying by documented losses and transaction volume.

Was Proof Required to File?

Claimants who received a personalized notice could enter the Notice ID and Confirmation Code printed on it, which pre-filled parts of the claim form. Filing without a Notice ID was also allowed — class members could complete the form manually. Documented-loss claims (out-of-pocket and transaction losses) required reasonable supporting documentation, such as receipts or account records, which is why many incomplete or undocumented filings were denied.

Can I Still File a Claim?

No. The claim deadline passed on November 18, 2024, and late claims are not being accepted. Anyone offering to file or "unlock" a late Cash App settlement claim for a fee is running a scam. Cash App is one of many companies that have had data breach incidents — if you're looking for cases that are still open, browse the current data breach settlements and investigations list.
