What Was the Case About?
In February 2022, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration reported finding a rodent infestation at Family Dollar's distribution center in West Memphis, Arkansas, with droppings inside the facility described as too numerous to count. After a fumigation, more than 1,100 rodents were reported found. The discovery led Family Dollar to temporarily close more than 400 stores across several states while affected products were pulled.The consolidated class action alleged that customers bought products that had been stored in and distributed from the contaminated facility. Family Dollar, a chain owned by Dollar Tree, did not acknowledge wrongdoing as part of the settlement.
The class action was not the only consequence. In 2024 the company pleaded guilty in a related criminal food-safety case and agreed to pay $41.6 million, reported at the time as the largest monetary criminal penalty in a food safety case. In January 2025 Family Dollar Stores separately agreed to pay the State of Tennessee $1.125 million. Those matters are distinct from this consumer settlement and had their own terms.
Who Was Covered?
A person was potentially eligible if they resided in Arkansas, Alabama, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri or Tennessee, and purchased any product from an affected Family Dollar store between January 1, 2020 and February 18, 2022.What Benefits Were Available?
Approved claimants were to receive one $25 Family Dollar gift card per household. Under the settlement terms the card could be used on any product other than tobacco or alcohol, at any Family Dollar location in any state, would never expire, and could not be combined with other promotions, rebates or discounts. As with any settlement of this kind, the benefit could be adjusted if valid and timely claims exceeded what the settlement could cover.What Proof Was Required?

Claimants were asked to supply whatever detail they could about the purchase — the address of the Family Dollar store, the city, state and ZIP code, and the store number if they had it.
