What's the Google Assistant Class Action Settlement?

A class action lawsuit has been filed against Google over concerns that Google Assistant, also known as "OK Google" or "Hey Google" records user information without proper consent on certain Google devices, such as the Google Pixel phone, among others. The class action lawsuit, known as the Google Assistant Privacy Litigation, involves allegations against Google LLC and Alphabet Inc, Google's parent company.

The class action lawsuit claims that Google Assistant can inadvertently activate and record user communications without intentional user input, referred to as "False Accepts." They allege that Google wrongfully collects, uses, and discloses these audio recordings to improve its speech recognition technology, violating privacy assurances in Google's Privacy Policy and the California Unfair Competition Law. Google denies these allegations, and the court has not yet determined the outcome. The following Google smart devices may be included in the class action:

Google Pixel Smartphones
Smart Home Speakers (such as Google Home, Google Home Mini, Google Home Max, Nest Audio, and Nest Mini)
Smart Displays (such as Google Home Hub, Nest Hub, and Nest Hub Max)
Laptops and Tablets (including Pixelbook, Pixelbook Go, and Pixel Slate)
Digital Media Players (like Chromecast with Google TV)
Wireless Earphones (such as Pixel Buds, Pixel Buds A Series, and Pixel Buds Pro)
