A $1,250,000 class action settlement was reached with Milwaukee Electric Tool Corporation — famous for its power drills, saws, and more — over allegations that the company failed to clearly mark expiration dates on some of its products, potentially putting users at risk. Specifically, Milwaukee-branded abrasive wheels were at the center of the case.
Abrasive discs have everyday uses such as grinding and sanding and are commonly found in industrial and commercial applications as well as personal hobby work, including woodworking and masonry. The lawsuit alleged that some abrasive bonded wheels sold across the United States from January 1, 2017 to April 18, 2024 lacked clear expiration information, which could lead to safety hazards if users unknowingly used outdated wheels that could fail during use. Milwaukee denied any wrongdoing.
You qualified as a class member if you purchased any of the qualifying products at retail locations in the United States and its territories between January 1, 2017 and April 18, 2024. A full list of covered products was published on the official Milwaukee class action settlement website.
The settlement offered two types of benefits — changed company practices and monetary/cash benefits:
Monetary / Cash Benefits:
• With proof of purchase: consumers could recover the total amount spent on qualified Milwaukee abrasive discs, up to $100 per claim per household.
• Without proof of purchase: consumers could receive up to $2.50 per unit for up to eight units, with a maximum of $20 per household.
Business Practices:
• Milwaukee agreed to add a date code clearly indicating expiration dates on qualified abrasive discs or their packaging.
• Tool manuals would include a warning: "Don't use past the expiration (EXP) date" or similar language.
• Milwaukee's website would be updated to better explain the date code.
No, proof was not required to file. Claimants without documentation could receive the $20 tier. Those who provided proof of purchase could recover up to $100.
This was one of several class actions over expiration-date disclosures on bonded abrasive wheels and discs. The newest one is open now:
• Menard PERFORMAX & MASTERFORCE bonded abrasive wheel settlement (open — claim by July 7, 2026)
• $1.6M Saint-Gobain "Norton" bonded abrasive wheels settlement (closed)
• $1.9M Freud America "Diablo" bonded abrasive discs settlement (closed)
