What is Navy Federal Credit Union Class Action About?

A $5.5 million class action settlement has been agreed with Navy Federal Credit Union. According to the class action lawsuit, some of Navy Federal Credit Union's banking customers were charged international service fees for debit card use, and this allegedly broke their contract and the bank's good faith commitment, charging customers physically located in the United States a fee that is specifically for international charges.

According to the Navy Federal Credit Union's website as of May 2024, the International Service Assessment fee is a 1% fee charged on purchases to cover currency conversion costs. This fee also applies to ATM cash withdrawals, both at CO-OP Network ATMs, where some machines might charge the fee, and at non-Navy Federal/out-of-network ATMs, which additionally might impose varied ATM access fees and a $1 service fee for various transactions. The class action lawsuit seeks to address wrongdoing wherein customers were charged this fee even though they were not outside of the United States.

Do I Qualify for Payout?

All current and former Navy Federal Account holders who were charged at least one ISA (International Service Assessment) Fee at any time between August 9, 2016, and March 24, 2023, for purchases made while they were physically in the United States may be eligible for reimbursement.

How Much Can I Get Paid?

All Settlement Class Members who submit a valid claim will be eligible to receive a $4.00 base payment. If the Net Settlement Fund does not have sufficient funds to pay $4.00 to each member who submits a valid claim, the payment amount will be reduced on a pro rata basis.
