What Is the Whirlpool / Maytag Refrigerator Freezer Settlement About?

Has water suddenly started overflowing out of your Whirlpool or Maytag bottom-mount or french-door refrigerator and pooling on the kitchen floor? If so, you may be looking at the exact failure pattern the Corzine v. Whirlpool Corp. class action settlement was created to fix — and you may be owed a free replacement drain tube (and related parts) plus partial-to-full reimbursement of repair costs.

The lawsuit alleged that certain Whirlpool and Maytag refrigerators with a bottom-mount freezer or certain french-door configurations contain a freezer design defect: the defrost drain or drain tube can freeze over, ice builds up inside the freezer compartment, and water that should have drained away instead overflows out of the unit onto the kitchen floor. The settlement refers to this specific failure pattern as a "Freezing Event".

Whirlpool denies the freezer design is defective and denies any wrongdoing or liability. The court has not decided who is right. The parties agreed to settle for a $21 million benefit pool. The Settlement Administrator operates the official Settlement Website at FreezerSettlement.com, where class members can verify whether their model is in the class, file a claim within 90 days of a Freezing Event, or get help from the administrator.

Do I Qualify for the Whirlpool Freezer Class Action?

To qualify for a payment from the Corzine v. Whirlpool settlement, all of the following must be true:

• Your refrigerator is a Whirlpool or Maytag bottom-mount freezer or certain french-door model, with a model number on the official Group A or Group B eligible-model list. The full list is published at FreezerSettlement.com.
• Your refrigerator experienced a "Freezing Event" — ice buildup inside the freezer caused by a frozen drain or drain tube, with water overflowing out of the unit onto the floor.
• The Freezing Event occurred on or before December 31, 2026.
• You file your claim within 90 days of the Freezing Event — even if the Freezing Event itself happens later in the class period.

Side-by-side and top-freezer refrigerators are not in this class. The Whirlpool side-by-side wire-harness defect is covered by a separate settlement (Costa v. Whirlpool). Some additional requirements may apply; review the full qualifications in the settlement notice and on the official website before submitting.

How Much Can I Get Paid From the Whirlpool Freezer Settlement?

If you qualify, the benefits are structured around the part needed to fix the problem (typically the drain tube) plus a labor-reimbursement tier that scales with the year of the Freezing Event:

Free replacement part — the drain tube and any related components needed to fix the freezer drain are provided at no cost.
Years 1-3 after purchase: 100% of parts and 100% of labor for Qualifying Repairs you paid for.
Year 4 after purchase: 100% of parts and 65% of labor.
Year 5 after purchase: 100% of parts and 50% of labor.

Repair invoices showing the date of service, the work performed, and the amount paid are required to calculate the labor-reimbursement portion. The free replacement part is available without a repair invoice (you need only the model/serial and evidence of the Freezing Event, such as dated photos of the ice buildup and water leak).

How to Find Your Refrigerator's Model and Serial Number

The model and serial number for the claim are on a manufacturer label permanently affixed inside the unit — not on the back of the fridge and not on the sales receipt:

• Open the fresh-food compartment (the upper portion of the unit on a bottom-mount or french-door fridge).
• Look at the inside walls and ceiling. The label is typically on the left or right interior wall near the top, or on the ceiling, of the fresh-food compartment.
• Photograph the label and save the image. The Settlement Administrator may request it as part of your claim. The label includes the model number, serial number, manufacture date, and other identifiers.

Enter your model number on the official website to confirm whether your unit is on the Group A or Group B eligible-model list.

How Do I File a Claim and Get Paid?

File your claim on the official Settlement Website, FreezerSettlement.com, within 90 days of the Freezing Event. You will need:

  • Your refrigerator's model number and serial number (from the label inside the fresh-food compartment)
  • Evidence the Freezing Event occurred — dated photos of the ice buildup inside the freezer, water leaking onto the floor, or the related damage
  • Repair invoice or receipt (for the labor-reimbursement portion) showing the date, the work performed, and the amount paid
  • Bank or payment information to receive your settlement payment

Submit only authentic, unmodified images and documents. False or fraudulent claims can be rejected and may carry legal consequences; the claim form is signed under penalty of perjury.
