What Was the Case About?

In February 2023, Colgate-Palmolive recalled roughly 4.9 million bottles of Fabuloso multi-purpose cleaner. According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, the recalled products could contain Pseudomonas species bacteria, including Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Pseudomonas fluorescens. The CPSC warned that people with weakened immune systems, external medical devices or underlying lung conditions who were exposed to the bacteria faced a risk of serious infection that could require medical treatment.

Three proposed class actions followed, alleging that Colgate-Palmolive failed to recall the potentially contaminated products promptly. The settlement resolved those claims. Colgate-Palmolive did not admit wrongdoing.

Our separate coverage of the recall itself, including disposal guidance, is on the Fabuloso recall page. The CPSC advised consumers to stop using the recalled cleaner immediately and dispose of it in its original sealed container rather than emptying it.

Who Was Covered?

The class covered people who purchased a recalled Fabuloso product between December 14, 2022 and November 14, 2023. Eligible bottles carried lot numbers between 3001US78 and 3023US78, or between 2348US78 and 2365US78. Fabuloso is sold widely, including at Dollar General, Family Dollar, Home Depot, Sam's Club and Walmart.

What Benefits Were Available?

Claimants with proof of purchase could recover the full retail price of up to five recalled products. Claimants without proof could recover the retail value of up to two products. As with any fund of this kind, per-claim payments could be reduced proportionally if the total value of valid and timely claims exceeded what the fund could cover after court-approved fees, notice and administration costs.

What Proof Was Required?

No proof of purchase was required for the two-product tier, so this page is marked Proof Required: No. Claiming up to five products required documentation of the purchases. The administrator could follow up by mail or email requesting more information about a submitted claim.

What Happens Next?

The remaining steps were the court's ruling on final approval, resolution of any appeal, and distribution to approved claimants. No final approval order and no distribution date had been located as of July 29, 2026. Updates are posted on the official settlement website.
