What's The Hibbett Settlement About?
Hibbett, City Gear and Sports Additions retail stores have agreed to pay out a no proof required settlement as a result of a class action lawsuit. The class action litigation alleged that Hibbett Stores, which also include City Gear and Sports Additions stores, willfully violated FACTA by printing point-of-sale receipts for
credit card and debit card transactions that included more than 5 digits of the customer's card number. FACTA is a consumer law designed to protect consumers in three broad ways:
• Consumer Protection
• Security and Privacy
• Credit Reporting
According to Court documents, Hibbett Stores allegedly displayed more than the last five digits of the card number, which would be in violation of FACTA. FACTA, or the Fair and Accurate Credit Transactions Act is an act passed by the US congress in 2003 that aims to improve consumer credit-related activities and protect consumer personally identifiable information.
There are more than 1100 Hibbett stores nationwide. Hibbett, City Gear and Sports Additions physical retail stores are all over the United States, however, of the over 130 City Gear stores, most are concentrated in the central region of the US. Hibbett claims on their website that they have stores in 34 states, and that Hibbett is one of the fastest growing retailers in the country.
