What Was the Bonded Abrasive Discs Class Action About?

A $1,900,000 class action settlement resolved allegations over certain bonded abrasive disc products made by Freud America, Inc. Bonded abrasive discs — also called sanding or grinding discs — are a common tool used for machine tooling, woodworking, masonry, and other hobby or commercial work.

Freud America, the North Carolina-based company that manufactures and markets these products, was accused of fraud and false advertising. The lawsuit alleged that some of the bonded discs lacked the necessary disclosures providing expiration or "best by" dates, specifically on the "Diablo"-branded bonded abrasive wheels. Freud agreed to pay $1.9 million to resolve the case but did not admit any wrongdoing.

Who Qualified for a Payout?

You qualified if you were in the United States and purchased one of the covered bonded abrasive discs for personal use between January 1, 2017 and September 6, 2023. A full list of covered products was published on the official settlement website.

How Much Could Class Members Get?

The settlement was divided into two tiers:

Without proof of purchase: $2.50 per product for up to four products, for a total of $10 per claim.
With proof of purchase: up to $50 per claim.

Payouts were determined by the total number of valid claims and could be adjusted pro rata — higher if fewer claims were filed than expected, lower if more.

Was Proof Required to File a Claim?

No, proof was not required to file. Claimants without documentation could receive the $10 tier. Those who submitted valid proof of purchase could receive up to $50.
