What's This Recall About?

Unilever is a multinational producer of famous product lines that include Dove, Suave, Tresemme, TIGI - Rockaholic and Bedhead. Unilever has decided to voluntarily recall some of their dry shampoo aerosol cans that were produced prior to October 2021. They have also established a website that seeks to inform people and gather information to send checks or coupons to compensate consumers who may have purchased such products. Based on an independent investigation, an ingredient that was contained in these products is known to potentially cause harm to consumers that use it daily.

The ingredient under evaluation is benzene, which is a known carcinogen, and was also the center of a previous recall and class action settlement with Coppertone aerosol sun sprays. Unilever is paying checks, or issuing recalls for those who claim one product purchase without proof of purchase. If you claim more than one product, you will need to provide evidence of purchase. Benzene is known to be a cancer causing agent that may cause diseases such as Leukemia and bone marrow failure which can result in anemia according to the American Cancer Society.

How Much Can I Get?

At this time, the recall value varies depending on the product and amount of products claimed. You can claim up to 1 product without proof of purchase. To receive money, you must submit a request through Unilever's official recall website. Previously, a Coppertone recall was issued voluntarily for containing benzene that may have been harmful to consumers. The Coppertone recall eventually reached a Coppertone class action settlement that paid consumers upwards of $60 each with no proof of purchase required. Stay tuned to OpenClassActions for news of any potential Unilever class action lawsuits around their dry shampoo recall and the basis for the voluntary recall.

How Do I File a Claim?

Anyone who purchased a product that was from a recalled UPC and lot number can apply online on the official recall administration website that Unilever US has set up, and receive either a coupon to replace their dry shampoo, or a check reimbursement mailed to them. To file a claim, go to the UnileverRecall.com website and click the 'Get Started' button to go through the steps of checking if you qualify for the recall cash or coupon reward. You will be asked to gather some information on UPC and LOT numbers for products, which you can find here.

Qualifying products that are part of the recall are dry shampoo products that were manufactured before October 2021 and under the brand names of Dove, Nexxus, Suave, TIGI (Rockaholic and Bed Head), and TRESemmé.

Any serious or adverse events with the use of these products should be reported to the FDA through its MedWatch program. You can download the MedWatch reporting form here, or submit an FDA report online.
