Combined Fund: $15.26 million (3 separate settlements)
Proof: Documentation encouraged but not always required
What Is This Settlement About?
Three separate class action settlements have been reached in a massive multidistrict litigation over contaminated blood pressure medications. The lawsuit alleged that certain generic versions of valsartan, losartan, and irbesartan were manufactured using processes that created nitrosamine impurities -- NDMA, NDEA, and NMBA -- which are classified as probable human carcinogens. The contamination led to a series of nationwide drug recalls starting in 2018.
These three settlements resolve the economic loss claims -- meaning they cover what consumers and insurers overpaid for drugs that were allegedly contaminated and should not have been sold. They do not cover personal injury or medical monitoring claims, which are being litigated separately in the same MDL.
All three defendants deny any wrongdoing and deny that the levels of nitrosamine impurities found in their products were harmful or carcinogenic.
Three Settlements, One Claim Form
There are three separate settlement funds from three different pharmaceutical companies, but they are all administered through one website with one claim deadline. Here is what each settlement covers:
Hetero — Valsartan ($11,365,490): Covers individuals who purchased valsartan finished drug formulations containing Hetero Process III valsartan API, sold between May 1, 2018 and July 31, 2018. For full details on the Hetero settlement, including how to check if your pills were made by Hetero, see our in-depth Hetero Valsartan settlement page.
Aurobindo — Irbesartan ($2,000,000): Covers individuals who purchased irbesartan finished drug formulations manufactured using Aurobindo's IC Route of Synthesis, purchased from January 1, 2016 to the present.
Vivimed — Losartan ($1,899,000): Covers individuals who purchased losartan finished drug formulations sold under specific Vivimed National Drug Codes (NDCs): 23155-644-09, 23155-644-10, 23155-645-03, 23155-645-09, 23155-645-10, 23155-646-03, 23155-646-09, and 23155-646-10.
You may qualify for one, two, or all three settlements depending on which drugs you purchased.
Who Qualifies?
You qualify if you are an individual in the United States, its territories, or possessions who paid any amount of money for retail purchases of any of the covered drugs during the relevant time periods. This includes copays, out-of-pocket payments, and any other amount you paid. The class also includes third-party payors like health insurers and welfare funds.
You do not qualify if you purchased these drugs only for resale, if you are a pharmacy benefit manager, or if you are a federal or state government entity (with limited exceptions for self-funded government employee benefit plans).
If you are not sure whether you purchased a covered drug, you can visit the settlement website and answer a few questions to check your eligibility, or call the settlement administrator.
Do I Need Proof?
Documentation should be submitted to support your claim if possible. Pharmacy receipts, insurance explanation of benefits statements, or prescription history records are all examples of documentation that could support your claim.
If you submit a claim without documentation, the administrator will review it and may contact you for proof of purchase from your pharmacy. Providing documentation upfront will help prevent delays in processing your claim. But the notice does not state that documentation is absolutely required -- it says "if possible."
How Do I File a Claim?
Submit your claim online at SartanMedicationSettlement.com or download a paper claim form and mail it to the settlement administrator. Your claim must be submitted online or postmarked by June 2, 2026.
When Will Payments Be Sent?
The final approval hearing is scheduled for June 30, 2026 at 10:00 AM at Courtroom 3D of the U.S. District Court for the District of New Jersey. If the court grants final approval and no appeals are filed, the settlement administrator will begin distributing payments after the effective date. The exact timing depends on the court's final approval order and how long claims processing takes.
