What Is This Investigation About?

If your employer uses Fireflies AI notetaker software during virtual meetings and you live in Illinois, your biometric privacy rights may have been violated — and you could be entitled to compensation.

Fireflies AI is an artificial intelligence notetaking tool that joins virtual meetings on platforms like Zoom, Microsoft Teams, and Google Meet. It records the meeting, transcribes what each person says, and generates notes and action items. To create accurate transcripts that show who said what, AI notetaking tools like Fireflies typically analyze each speaker's voice — including characteristics like pitch, tone, and timbre — to distinguish between individual participants. This process can create what are known as "voiceprints," which are unique biometric identifiers tied to your voice.

Illinois has one of the strongest biometric privacy laws in the country: the Biometric Information Privacy Act (BIPA). Under BIPA, companies must provide clear written notice explaining what biometric data they are collecting and how it will be used. They must also obtain your informed written consent before collecting that data, and they must publish a written policy outlining how long the data will be stored and when it will be destroyed.

Attorneys are now investigating whether Fireflies AI collects voiceprints from meeting participants without providing this required notice or obtaining their consent — which would be a direct violation of BIPA.

Why Does This Matter?

Unlike a password or a credit card number, you cannot change your voiceprint once it has been captured. If your biometric voice data is compromised, there is no way to undo it. That is exactly why Illinois enacted BIPA — to protect people from having their biometric data collected and stored without their knowledge.

BIPA has produced some of the largest privacy settlements in history. Facebook paid $650 million to settle a BIPA class action over facial recognition. Google paid $100 million over Google Photos. The law allows individuals to sue for $1,000 per negligent violation or $5,000 per intentional or reckless violation — and each time your voiceprint is collected without consent can count as a separate violation.

Do I Qualify?

You may qualify for this investigation if all of the following apply to you:

You are a current resident of Illinois. Your employer or a meeting organizer uses Fireflies AI notetaker software during virtual work meetings (on Zoom, Microsoft Teams, Google Meet, or any other platform). You were not informed in writing that your voice biometrics were being collected. You did not provide written consent for Fireflies AI to collect your voiceprint.

This investigation is limited to Illinois residents because BIPA is an Illinois state law. However, other states are enacting similar biometric privacy laws, so the landscape may expand in the future.

How Much Could I Get?

There is no settlement or payout at this stage — this is an active attorney investigation, not a settled lawsuit. However, if a class action is filed and succeeds or settles, BIPA provides for statutory damages of $1,000 per negligent violation or $5,000 per intentional or reckless violation, plus reasonable attorneys' fees. Each meeting in which your voiceprint was collected without consent could potentially constitute a separate violation.

How Do I Participate?

If you are an Illinois resident whose employer uses Fireflies AI during work meetings, you can submit your information through the form below. The investigating attorneys will review your submission and contact you if you may have a viable claim.

There is no cost to you and no obligation. The attorneys work on a contingency basis, meaning they only get paid if they win or settle on your behalf.
