If you cleaned homes or did handyman jobs through the Handy app any time from 2019 to late 2024, check your mail: the FTC started sending refund checks this week, and there is nothing you need to file.
The FTC is sending 62,893 checks totaling more than $2.7 million to people who worked through the Handy platform — cleaners, handymen, and other home-service professionals — between January 2019 and November 2024. Recipients were identified from Handy's records; there is no claim form and no application.
Yes. The checks come from the FTC's settlement with Handy Technologies, announced with the New York Attorney General in January 2025 over deceptive earnings claims and undisclosed fees charged to workers. The distribution is administered by Simpluris and checks began mailing July 7, 2026. Cash your check within 90 days. The FTC never asks you to pay a fee or share account credentials to receive a refund — anyone who does is a scammer.
The FTC and New York Attorney General alleged Handy advertised inflated earnings — such as up to $45 per hour for handyman work and $62 per hour for lawn care — that the large majority of workers in many markets never made, and charged workers undisclosed fees and fines that further cut their pay. Handy, an Angi company, settled the claims; the settlement funds these refunds.
Refunds went to workers identified in the settlement records for January 2019 through November 2024. If you believe you qualify but received nothing, use the refunds section of the FTC's website (ftc.gov/refunds), which lists the Handy Technologies case and how to reach the distribution administrator. Do not trust third-party sites or callers offering to recover your refund for a fee.
