Compex Legal Services, Inc. is a nationwide litigation-support company that handles records retrieval and related services for law firms, insurers, and other clients. According to the settlement notice, in April 2024 Compex discovered that an unauthorized user had gained access to its systems (the "Cyber Incident") containing individuals' personally identifiable information (PII) and protected health information (PHI). Compex mailed and published notice of the incident to affected people starting in August 2024. Compex denies any wrongdoing, and no court has determined that any law was violated; the parties agreed to settle to avoid the cost and risk of continued litigation.
The case, Shahbaz, et al. v. Compex Legal Services, Inc., Case No. 24STCV23351, is pending in the Superior Court of California, County of Los Angeles, before the Honorable Elihu M. Berle. Under the settlement, Compex has agreed to pay $872,500.00 (the "Settlement Fund") to resolve the claims. Eligible Class Members can now file a Claim Form for reimbursement of documented losses and a flat cash payment. The claim deadline is August 19, 2026. This page explains who qualifies, what you can get, and how to file.

Who Qualifies?
You are a "Class Member" if your personally identifiable information or protected health information was, or could have been, impacted as a result of the Cyber Incident. Compex previously mailed and published notice of the Cyber Incident to Class Members starting in August 2024, so if you received that notice, the settlement administrator has already identified you as part of the Settlement Class.
Certain people are excluded from the Settlement Class, including the judge(s) presiding over the case and their families; Compex, its subsidiaries, parent companies, and their officers, directors, and employees; anyone who timely and properly excludes themselves from the settlement; and the successors or assigns of any excluded person. If you are not sure whether you are included, you can confirm your status through the official settlement website.
How Much Can You Get?
All Class Members who submit a valid, timely Claim Form are eligible for two benefits:
Documented losses — up to $5,000. If you suffered verifiable financial losses reasonably traceable to the Cyber Incident, you can be reimbursed up to $5,000. Covered losses may include out-of-pocket costs for identity-theft protection or credit monitoring you purchased, financial losses from identity theft, fees for professional services to remedy identity theft, and time and expenses spent resolving fraud, unauthorized transactions, or credit issues traceable to the incident. You must submit supporting proof such as receipts or account statements. Losses cannot be documented solely by a personal certification, declaration, affidavit, or handwritten receipt, and lost-time claims are not reimbursed.
Flat cash payment — expected to be $100–$200. Every Class Member may claim a flat cash payment, expected to fall between $100 and $200. Because this payment is a share of the Settlement Fund, it is subject to a pro rata adjustment based on the total number of valid claims — meaning the final amount could be higher or lower depending on how many people file.
The $872,500 Settlement Fund is also used to pay the costs of notice and claims administration, court-approved attorneys' fees and costs (Class Counsel will request up to 33.33% of the fund), and Service Awards of up to $2,500 to the class representatives, before Class Member benefits are paid.
How to File a Claim
The only way to receive a payment is to submit a Claim Form. You can file online at the official settlement website or by mailing a paper Claim Form to the settlement administrator. To file online, you must log in with the Unique ID and PIN printed on the notice that was mailed to you. If you plan to claim the documented-loss benefit, be ready to upload your supporting documentation.
If you cannot locate your Unique ID and PIN, you can request them through the official settlement website's contact page — provide your full name and mailing address so the administrator can look up your notice. Whether you file online or by mail, your claim must be submitted or postmarked no later than August 19, 2026.
You have other options too. If you do nothing, you will remain in the Settlement Class, receive no payment, and give up your right to sue Compex over the claims resolved by the settlement. If you want to keep your right to sue, you must exclude yourself (opt out) by July 20, 2026. If you want to stay in the class but tell the Court why you object to the settlement, you must submit an objection by July 20, 2026. The Court's final approval hearing is scheduled for August 31, 2026; no payments will be issued unless and until the Court approves the settlement and it becomes final.
Watch Out for Scams
Legitimate settlement administrators never ask you to pay a fee to release a class action payment, and they will not ask for your banking passwords or a "processing payment" to send your check. File only through the official settlement website, and ignore any call, text, or email demanding payment or sensitive account credentials to "claim" your money. Frequently Asked Questions
Who qualifies for the Compex Legal Services data breach settlement?
You are a Class Member if your personally identifiable information (PII) or protected health information (PHI) was or could have been impacted by the cyber incident Compex discovered in April 2024. Compex mailed and published notice to affected people starting in August 2024. If you received that notice, the settlement administrator has already identified you as a Class Member.
How much can I get from the Compex settlement?
Every Class Member who files a valid claim can receive up to $5,000 in reimbursement for documented losses reasonably traceable to the incident, plus a flat cash payment expected to be between $100 and $200. The cash payment is subject to a pro rata adjustment based on the total number of valid claims, so the final amount could be higher or lower depending on claim volume.
Do I need proof to file a claim?
Yes. To file online you must log in with the Unique ID and PIN printed on the notice Compex mailed to you. To claim the documented-loss benefit of up to $5,000 you must also submit supporting proof such as receipts or account statements. The flat cash payment does not require loss documentation, but the Unique ID and PIN from your notice are still needed to file, so an administrator-issued identifier is required either way.
What is the deadline to file a claim?
Claims must be submitted online or postmarked by August 19, 2026. If you want to exclude yourself (opt out) or object to the settlement, the deadline for both is earlier — July 20, 2026. The Court's final approval hearing is scheduled for August 31, 2026, and no payments will be made unless and until the Court approves the settlement and it becomes final.
