What Is the Generac PWRcell Solar Settlement About?

Do you own or use a Generac PWRcell solar power system? If your system was purchased before January 9, 2026, you may be eligible for a pro rata cash payment from a $15 million class action settlement, plus possible reimbursement for documented losses tied to defective SnapRS devices. The deadline to file a claim is August 24, 2026.

The Generac class action lawsuit, captioned In re: Generac Solar Power Systems Marketing Sales Practices and Products Liability Litigation, MDL No. 3078, is pending in the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Wisconsin before Judge Lynn Adelman. The Generac lawsuit alleges that certain components of PWRcell solar power systems, called SnapRS devices, may overheat, melt, or fail, causing system shutdowns and performance issues with the solar power system as a whole.

Generac Holdings Inc. and Generac Power Systems, Inc. deny the allegations and deny any wrongdoing or liability. The court has not decided who is right. Both sides agreed to the settlement to avoid the risk, cost, and time of continuing the litigation. The settlement creates a $15,000,000 Settlement Fund. Class Counsel includes attorneys from Kershaw Talley Barlow PC; Lieff Cabraser Heimann & Bernstein LLP; Bryson, Harris, Suciu & Demay PLLC; Carey & Danis LLC; and Lee Segui PLLC.

30-Second Self-Test: Do I Qualify for the Generac Settlement?

If you can answer yes to the question below, you are likely a Settlement Class Member.

Are you the current Owner and/or Primary User of a Generac PWRcell solar power system that was purchased in the United States before January 9, 2026? Current Owner means any person or entity holding contractual ownership rights to a PWRcell System. Primary User means a homeowner or occupant of the property where a PWRcell System is installed who is financially responsible for the electric service on the premises. You can qualify as the Owner, the Primary User, or both.

If you answered yes, head to the official Settlement Website to file your claim by August 24, 2026. Excluded from the class are Generac and its affiliates, officers, directors, and employees; the judge and immediate family; Class Counsel and defense counsel; people who timely opt out; and owners or primary users of systems provided through U.S. Department of Energy grants.

What Is a SnapRS Device and Why Does It Matter?

SnapRS devices are components of Generac PWRcell solar power systems that provide rapid shutdown functionality. Rapid shutdown is a safety feature required by electrical code that quickly de-energizes solar panel wiring (for example, so firefighters can safely work on a roof during an emergency). SnapRS devices are part of how the PWRcell system delivers that rapid shutdown capability.

The class action lawsuit alleges that SnapRS devices may overheat, melt, or fail. When a SnapRS device fails, the lawsuit alleges, it can cause the PWRcell system to shut down and create performance issues across the whole solar power system. For homeowners, the practical impact of a failed SnapRS device can include reduced solar energy generation, system downtime, and the cost and inconvenience of repairs or service calls.

Generac denies that the SnapRS devices are defective and denies any wrongdoing. The settlement resolves the dispute without any admission of fault. The court has not ruled on whether the SnapRS allegations have merit.

What Are the Generac Settlement Benefits?

The Generac settlement provides both monetary and non-monetary benefits. The structure rewards class members who file a claim with cash, while also delivering warranty and educational benefits more broadly.

Monetary Benefit 1: Pro Rata Cash Payment (minimal proof). A portion of the $15 million Settlement Fund is allocated to compensate all eligible class members who submit a valid claim. To qualify for this benefit, a class member need only establish their status as Owner or Primary User of an eligible PWRcell System. Those who submit valid claims receive a pro rata share of that allocated fund. This is the baseline cash benefit and the easiest tier to claim.

Monetary Benefit 2: Out-of-Pocket Loss Reimbursement (evidence required). Class members who can provide satisfactory evidence of out-of-pocket financial losses associated with a SnapRS-related problem may be eligible for reimbursement of all or part of those losses. Qualifying documentation typically includes repair invoices, service call receipts, parts costs, and similar records showing money spent because of a SnapRS-related failure.

Monetary Benefit 3: Lost Energy Generation Compensation (evidence required). Class members who can provide satisfactory evidence of lost energy generation associated with a SnapRS-related problem in two or more months may be eligible for additional compensation. Qualifying documentation typically includes system monitoring data, production reports from the PWRcell system or solar monitoring app, and utility bills or records showing reduced solar production over the affected months.

Non-Monetary Benefit 1: Warranty Changes (purchased before May 2022). Settlement Class Members who purchased their PWRcell systems before May 2022 will receive non-monetary benefits in the form of warranty changes. The complete warranty change details are in Section 3.7 of the Settlement Agreement.

Non-Monetary Benefit 2: Educational Materials (all class members). All Settlement Class Members, regardless of purchase date, will have access to educational materials related to possible Snap-related error codes. These materials help owners understand and respond to SnapRS-related error codes their systems may display.

How the Proof Requirement Works for Each Benefit Tier

One important nuance about the Generac settlement: the documentation requirement is tier-specific. The three monetary benefits have different evidence requirements, and class members can claim more than one tier if they qualify.

Pro rata cash payment: minimal documentation. You only need to establish that you are the Owner or Primary User of an eligible PWRcell System. This typically means confirming your system details (such as the installation address, purchase information, or system identifiers) on the claim form. Most class members can complete this tier quickly.

Out-of-pocket loss reimbursement: satisfactory evidence required. You must document the money you spent because of a SnapRS-related problem. Gather repair invoices, service receipts, parts purchase records, and similar documentation before filing. Without supporting evidence, the loss reimbursement tier cannot be approved.

Lost energy generation compensation: satisfactory evidence required. You must document lost energy generation in two or more months caused by a SnapRS-related problem. PWRcell systems and most solar monitoring platforms record production data; that monitoring history, along with utility records, is the type of evidence used to support this tier.

The specific eligibility criteria and exact documentation standards for each tier are detailed on the official claim form. Class members who experienced SnapRS failures should gather their repair and monitoring records before starting the claim so the documented-loss tiers can be completed in one sitting.

Important: Owner and Primary User Opt-Out Rule

The Generac settlement has an unusual rule that co-located Owners and Primary Users need to understand before anyone takes action.

Where a PWRcell System has both a current Owner and a Primary User who are different people (for example, a landlord who owns the system and a tenant who is the primary user, or a financing company and a homeowner), both are part of the Settlement Class. But if either the Owner or the Primary User submits a valid opt-out notice, both will be opted out and both will be ineligible to make a claim under the settlement. Neither will release their claims against Generac, but neither can collect settlement benefits either.

The practical takeaway: if you share a PWRcell System with another class member (an owner or a primary user who is a different person), coordinate before anyone opts out. One person's opt-out removes the other person's ability to file a claim. The Settlement Administrator will notify affected class members if they cannot receive benefits for this reason.

How to File a Generac PWRcell Settlement Claim

Two methods are available, both with the same August 24, 2026 deadline.

Method 1: Online (recommended for speed). Visit the official Settlement Website at GeneracSnapSettlement.com and complete the online claim form. Establish your Owner or Primary User status for the pro rata cash payment, and if you experienced SnapRS-related losses, upload documentation for the out-of-pocket loss reimbursement and lost energy generation tiers. Select your payment method. Online claim submissions process faster than mailed claims.

Method 2: U.S. mail. Print the claim form from the Settlement Website or request one by phone from the Settlement Administrator. Complete it with your system and ownership information, attach documentation for any documented-loss tiers, and mail it to the Generac PWRcell Settlement Administrator at the address listed on the claim form. Mailed claims must be postmarked no later than August 24, 2026.

Before you file, gather: your PWRcell system information (installation address, purchase date, system identifiers), and if claiming documented-loss tiers, your repair invoices, service receipts, and system monitoring or production data showing SnapRS-related losses.

Payment method options: Several electronic payment options will be available, or you can elect a paper check. Provide a current and complete email address so the electronic payment or check-status communications reach you.

Key Generac PWRcell Settlement Deadlines

• Opt out of the settlement by: Monday, July 20, 2026
• Object to the settlement by: Monday, July 20, 2026
• Class eligibility cutoff: PWRcell systems purchased before January 9, 2026
• Final Approval Hearing: Wednesday, October 21, 2026 at 10:00 a.m. CDT, before Judge Lynn Adelman in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Wisconsin, 517 E. Wisconsin Ave, Courtroom 390, Milwaukee, WI 53202

When Will I Receive My Generac Settlement Payment?

Payments will be made only after the court grants final approval at the October 21, 2026 fairness hearing and the settlement becomes final.

Best case (no appeals): Final approval at the October 21, 2026 hearing, appeals window closes 30 to 60 days after, payment distribution begins in late 2026 or early 2027.
If appeals are filed: Distribution can be delayed by 12 to 36 months while the appellate court reviews the settlement or fee award.

Class members who submitted a timely and approved claim will receive payment by the Settlement Administrator after the settlement becomes final. Several electronic payment options will be available, or class members can elect a paper check. Providing a current and complete email address at the time of filing is important so payment communications are not missed.

What Happens If I Do Nothing?

If you do nothing, you remain in the Settlement Class (assuming you do not opt out) and will be bound by the court's decisions, but you will not receive any monetary settlement benefits. You will give up your right to sue Generac for the legal claims being released by the settlement, including future claims related to the SnapRS device allegations.

One distinction worth noting: even class members who do nothing may still receive the non-monetary benefits (the warranty changes for pre-May 2022 purchasers and the educational materials for all class members). But the monetary benefits, the pro rata cash payment and the documented-loss reimbursements, require submitting a valid claim form by August 24, 2026. For PWRcell system owners, filing a claim is the only way to access the cash portion of the settlement.

How to Opt Out or Object to the Settlement

Class members who do not want to be bound by the settlement have two alternatives, both with the same July 20, 2026 deadline.

Opting out means giving up the right to receive any settlement benefit but preserving the right to sue Generac individually for the same claims. Opt-out requests must be in writing (mailed or submitted on the Settlement Website), postmarked by July 20, 2026, and include the case name (MDL No. 3078), your full name, telephone, current address, a clear request-for-exclusion statement, and your physical signature. Remember the co-owner rule: if a PWRcell System has both an Owner and a Primary User, one person opting out opts out both. Mass or class opt-outs filed by third parties are not allowed.

Objecting means staying in the class (and remaining eligible for benefits) but asking the court to reject or modify the settlement. Written objections must be filed with the court (electronically via ECF or by delivery to the Clerk of the Court) and copies sent to Class Counsel and defense counsel, postmarked or filed by July 20, 2026. Objections must include the case name and number, your contact information, the specific grounds for the objection with supporting documents, whether the objection applies to you or the broader class, attorney identification if represented, whether you intend to appear at the Final Approval Hearing, a list of other class action settlements you or your attorney have objected to, and your signature.

Other Active Product Defect Class Action Settlements

Product defect and products liability class actions are common across the consumer goods, automotive, and home systems industries. Class members who have received notices about other product defect settlements may qualify for separate settlements; filing one claim does not affect eligibility for any others.

Check the OCA database of open class action settlements for any matching cases that may also pay benefits.
