If you were charged for video calls or messaging services by Global Tel*Link Corporation (ViaPath Technologies) between May 15, 2022, and April 30, 2023, you may be owed substantial compensation from a new class action settlement. Global Tel Link has settled a class action over allegations that it overcharged consumers beyond contractually allowed rates.
Global Tel Link (also known as GTL, and rebranded as ViaPath Technologies in 2022) is a telecom company that provides phone and communication services in U.S. prisons. Global Tel Link has been in the news for allegedly charging high rates to inmates for phone calls and communications, and has faced criticism and lawsuits over pricing practices and profit-sharing deals with correctional facilities and prisons.
The Global Tel Link lawsuit alleges that ViaPath overcharged incarcerated individuals and their families for video calls, tablet usage, and messaging services, violating the Federal Telecommunications Act, West Virginia Consumer Credit and Protection Act, and committing conversion under West Virginia common law.
Consumers who:
• Were incarcerated in West Virginia jails or prisons during the specified period and were overcharged for services on Inspire Wireless Tablets.
• Were non-incarcerated individuals who contacted incarcerated individuals using ViaPath's “Getting Out” app and were overcharged for services.
