Google has settled a class action lawsuit over allegations that it violated the Illinois Biometric Information Privacy Act (Also known as "BIPA") by collecting and storing biometric data (such as voice and face models) of individuals enrolled in Illinois schools using its Google Workspace for Education or G Suite for Education platform, without proper notice and consent.
Google denies all allegations and wrongdoing but has agreed to pay $8.75 million to resolve the lawsuit. The settlement is intended to compensate individuals who had a Google Workspace for Education or G Suite for Education account while enrolled in an Illinois school between March 26, 2015, and May 15, 2025.
