What is the Atlanticare Data Breach About?
Intellihartx, LLC is a company that provides collections services to medical offices throughout the country. One of the providers they support is AtlantiCare. AtlantiCare is a health system in South New Jersey which operates many different medical centers. AtlantiCare recently announced a data breach to the Intellihartx, LLC computer system which exposed the data of 489,830 individuals. If you are or have been a patient of an AtlantiCare patient, your data may have been compromised. The information the hackers were able to steal included personally identifiable information such as:
• Patient Names,
• Dates of Birth (D.O.B's),
• Social Security Numbers,
• Personal Billing Information,
• Insurance Information,
• Diagnoses and Medical Records.
AtlantiCare reported on their official website that Intellihartx (known as ITx) acknowledged that a security incident had been discovered on February 2, 2023. The incident involved an FTP provider (File Transfer Protocol), Fortra GoAnywhere, which had been compromised in a cybersecurity attack which leaked potentially sensitive, important, and protected patient healthcare information. This data breach has affected millions of other customers, outside of just AtlantiCare. Even children's data is feared to have been stolen as part of the Fortra GoAnywhere Ransomware attack.
What is a Ransomware Data Breach?
Imagine you're the guardian of a digital fortress. One day, a group of malicious hackers, armed with cunning tactics, infiltrate your fortress and take your digital treasures hostage. They do this by encrypting your precious files and locking you out of accessing them. Just like a skilled kidnapper, they demand a hefty ransom from you in exchange for the safe return of your files.
This virtual kidnapping scenario is what we call ransomware. It's a type of malicious software designed to encrypt or lock down files on a victim's computer or network, rendering them inaccessible. The hackers then demand a ransom, usually in the form of cryptocurrency, in exchange for providing the decryption key or unlocking the files.
Ransomware can spread through various means, including phishing emails, compromised websites, or even exploiting software vulnerabilities. It's like a digital predator lurking in the shadows, ready to strike unsuspecting victims.
