Weber Recalls Over 3.2 Million Wire Bristle Grill Brushes

If you own a Weber grill brush with metal wire bristles, stop using it immediately. Weber-Stephen Products has recalled approximately 3.2 million metal wire bristle grill brushes sold nationwide from 2011 through 2026 because small wire bristles can break off during cleaning, stick to grill grates, transfer onto food, and be swallowed — causing serious internal injuries that may require surgery.

The recall was announced on February 26, 2026 in cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), recall number 26-282. This is one of the largest grill accessory recalls in recent memory.

Why Are These Grill Brushes Being Recalled?

The wire bristles on these brushes can detach during normal use, remain stuck to the grill grate, and then transfer to food without being noticed. If a person eats food with a wire bristle embedded in it, the bristle can become lodged in the throat, stomach, or intestines — potentially requiring emergency medical treatment or surgery to remove.

The CPSC has received at least 38 reports of bristles detaching from the recalled brushes, including four reports of consumers who swallowed bristles and needed medical treatment to remove them from their throat or digestive tract. The CDC has previously documented this as a serious hazard category, noting that unintentional ingestion of wire grill brush bristles can cause significant internal injuries.

Which Models Are Recalled?

The recall covers Weber metal wire bristle grill brushes with plastic or wood handles, approximately 12 to 21 inches long, with the following model numbers (printed on the product packaging):

• Model 6277
• Model 6278
• Model 6463
• Model 6464
• Model 6493
• Model 6494

These brushes were sold at major retailers nationwide including Lowe's, The Home Depot, Ace Hardware, Target, Amazon, and Weber's own website from 2011 through 2026. They were also widely resold on platforms like eBay. The brushes were manufactured in China and Cambodia and imported by Weber-Stephen Products LLC (Palatine, Illinois).

How Do I Find Class Action Settlements?

Find all the latest class actions you can qualify for by getting notified of new lawsuits as soon as they are open to claims:

What Is the Remedy?

Weber is offering a free cold-cleaning nylon bristle grill brush as a replacement. This is a replacement program, not a cash refund. To receive your replacement:

• Stop using the recalled brush immediately
• Register on Weber's recall portal
• Upload photos of your brush as part of the verification process
• After your photos are approved, you will be asked to discard the recalled brush
• Weber will send you a free nylon replacement brush

Note: The replacement brush is a "cold cleaning" brush, meaning it is designed to be used when the grill is not hot. This is a different type of product than the original wire brush, which many consumers used on hot grill grates.

Can I Get a Cash Refund Instead?

The official CPSC recall remedy is replacement only, not a cash refund. However, Weber separately offers an accessory Satisfaction Guarantee that may allow a refund or replacement within 30 days of purchase with proof of purchase and photos — but this is limited to purchases from Weber or an authorized U.S. seller and must be requested within 30 days of purchase. For most consumers who bought these brushes years ago, this guarantee will not apply.

The CPSC has clarified that it does not negotiate individualized refunds or higher remedies for individual consumers beyond what the company agreed to in the recall program.

What If I Was Injured?

If you or a family member swallowed or may have swallowed a wire bristle from a Weber grill brush, seek medical evaluation immediately. Tell your healthcare provider that you suspect wire bristle ingestion so they can order appropriate imaging.

For injured consumers, the recall replacement program is not a medical compensation program. However, there are legal options. Multiple class action lawsuits have already been filed against Weber-Stephen Products LLC in federal court in the Northern District of Illinois, including proposed class actions alleging deceptive practices, failure to warn, negligence, and breach of implied warranty. As of mid-March 2026 these cases are in very early stages.

If you were injured, you should preserve all evidence (the brush, packaging, photos of loose bristles, medical records and bills), report the incident to the CPSC via SaferProducts.gov, and consult a product liability attorney.

How to Report an Incident

The CPSC chair has urged consumers to report incidents immediately. You can report through:

SaferProducts.gov — online incident report
• CPSC Hotline — available by phone, fax, email, or mail

If you have already contacted Weber about the recall remedy and are experiencing problems (delays, non-response, denial), you can file a complaint through the CPSC Recall Complaint Form.

Important Safety Steps Right Now

• Stop using any metal wire bristle grill brush immediately
• Inspect your grill grate carefully for any loose wire bristles before cooking
• Examine food closely before eating — especially food that was cooked on a grill recently cleaned with a wire brush
• Consider switching to non-wire grill cleaning alternatives (nylon brushes, wooden scrapers, grill stones, or balled aluminum foil)
• If you suspect you swallowed a wire bristle, seek medical attention immediately
