What Is the Tinder Age Discrimination Settlement?
A settlement was reached in Kim v. Tinder, Inc. over allegations that Tinder charged a
higher price for subscriptions to Tinder Plus and Tinder Gold to consumers who were 29 years of
age or older. The plaintiff filed the lawsuit on behalf of a class, seeking damages and
restitution. The claim deadline has passed and the settlement is now closed.
Who Qualified?
For purposes of settlement only, the Court certified a Class consisting of Tinder users in
California who subscribed to Tinder Plus or Tinder Gold during the period between March 2, 2015
and March 1, 2019, were at least 29 years old at the time of purchase, and were charged a higher
rate than younger subscribers.
What Did Class Members Receive?
Every Class Member who did not ask to be excluded automatically received a one-time allotment of
70 Super Likes and one Boost at no cost, so long as the member had a Tinder account at the time
of the allotment. That allotment was valued at $118.30, with each Super Like valued at its
selling price of $1.59 and the Boost valued at its selling price of $7.
Class Members could instead elect to receive additional compensation in the amount of $50,
although the payment could have ended up being higher or lower than $50 (but in no event less
than $30).
No claim was needed to receive the 70 Super Likes and one Boost. After the Effective Date of the
settlement, Tinder automatically credited eligible accounts with the allotment. Class members
who no longer had a Tinder account needed to create one using the same email address used for
their original account before the Effective Date.
How Did Class Members File a Claim?
To receive the monetary payment, a Class Member had to complete a Claim Form on the official
settlement website and provide the Unique ID found at the beginning of the email by which they
received notice of the settlement. The form could be completed online or printed, filled out,
and mailed per the instructions printed on the form. Claim Forms were due by
February 9, 2022, or thirty days after entry of Final Approval of the settlement.
Do I Need Proof to File a Claim?
Yes. Filing the claim form for the cash payment required the Unique ID printed at the top of the
email notice the Settlement Administrator sent to identified class members. That Unique ID served
as proof of class membership. Class members who could not locate their Unique ID could request it
through the official settlement website.
