What Was the TracFone Settlement About?
The lawsuit followed a data-security incident associated with TracFone in December 2021. Plaintiffs alleged that TracFone failed to use adequate safeguards and asserted negligence, contract, and statutory claims connected with the alleged exposure of customer information. Who Was Included?
The settlement covered U.S. residents who were current or former TracFone customers and whose information was affected by the data-security incident on or before December 2021. The notice said covered brands could include TracFone, Straight Talk, Simple Mobile, Net10 Wireless, Walmart Family Mobile, and Total Wireless. Receiving notice indicated that the administrator’s records linked a person to the incident, but a timely and valid claim was still required for settlement benefits.What Benefits Were Available?
The settlement offered several benefit categories rather than one guaranteed payment. A claimant could seek up to $3,250 for qualifying ordinary losses and lost time, with lost time valued at $30 per hour for up to 15 hours. Eligible claimants could also request three years of one-bureau credit monitoring with identity-theft insurance. Ordinary-loss claims could include qualifying out-of-pocket costs reasonably connected with the incident, along with compensation for time spent addressing its effects. The claim form required the impacted TracFone number and information explaining the requested benefit. A person claiming time did not necessarily need the same kind of receipt required for a direct expense, but still had to provide truthful details and satisfy the form’s attestation. The administrator, not OpenClassActions, decided whether a claimed loss qualified.What Counted as an Extraordinary Loss?
The extraordinary category addressed documented losses such as identity-theft consequences or other substantial losses that exceeded the ordinary reimbursement. Claimants had to provide supporting documentation and show that the loss was fairly traceable to the incident and was not already reimbursed. The $50,000 figure was the maximum possible extraordinary reimbursement; it was not the amount sent to every affected customer.How Did the Historical Claim Process Work?
People who received a settlement notice used the Unique ID printed on that notice to access the online form. A person who believed they were included but lacked an ID could use the administrator’s registration process to obtain one before filing. Claims had to be submitted online or postmarked by August 7, 2025. That process is now historical, and the presence of an old claim button on an administrator page does not extend the deadline.What Happened During Court Approval?
The court scheduled a renewed final approval hearing for February 3, 2026, after the original schedule changed. The official documents page now includes a final approval order. Payments could not be issued merely because a hearing occurred; the court first had to grant approval, claims had to be reviewed, and distribution had to be authorized. The administrator’s later April 9 payment notice confirms that those steps progressed to issuance for approved claims.When Were Payments Sent?
The administrator states that all submitted claims were reviewed and payments for approved claims were issued on April 9, 2026. It directed recipients to deposit or cash paper checks promptly because uncashed checks would become void after July 8, 2026. That date has passed.
