What to Know About the Barry Brock Sexual Abuse Cases

When doctors turn out to be abusers, it often ends in tragedy for their patients. Unfortunately, multiple gynecologists have been accused of widespread sexual abuse of their patients, who are particularly vulnerable to predatory behavior due to the sensitive nature of female reproductive health.

One of the most recent and tragic examples is Dr. Barry Brock, a former obstetrician- gynecologist (OBGYN) at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, who has been accused of abusive behavior by over 100 women. Class action lawsuits are now ongoing due to the shocking nature of his crimes.

Who is Barry Brock?

Barry Brock was a gynecologist affiliated with the Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, where he worked for 44 years. After graduating from McGill University in 1976, he was accepted into the obstetrics and gynecology residency program at the medical center, where he was then hired in 1981.

Troubling reports began to surface in the early 2000s about his inappropriate behavior with patients, but Cedars-Sinai refused to investigate and continued to vouch for their physician. Throughout the 2010s, more women came forward to complain, yet the hospital did not perform any internal investigations or take the allegations seriously.

In June 2024, the situation reached a boiling point. Patients began to openly share their horrific experiences with the physician, garnering media attention. Cedars-Sinai began a formal investigation in July 2024 and revoked his medical privileges in August 2024. Dr. Brock himself tried to prevent legal action by contacting former patients and telling them that he would be retiring in hopes that they would not pursue charges. He was officially dismissed in September 2024 as the class action lawsuits began to pick up steam.

As of January 2025, 167 patients have filed lawsuits against Barry Brock, and it is unknown whether even more will come forward to share their stories.

Allegations Against Barry Brock

The Los Angeles Times ran an exhaustive expose against Dr. Brock in October 2024 that went into extreme detail about his misconduct, including his denials of any wrongdoing. He performed unnecessary breast and cervical exams for patients while making sexually suggestive remarks, sometimes even in the presence of the patients' partners. In one case, he digitally penetrated a woman in her rectum while performing a Pap smear, though he claims that this was an accident.

Multiple women were severely harmed when he put in unnecessary stitches after childbirth, stating that this would make them virgins again and satisfy their husbands. In one case, a woman was stitched so tightly that she could not insert tampons and experienced severe pain during intercourse.

However, some of his victims were the patients' children, who were injured due to his negligence during childbirth.

The Lawsuit Information Center reported that the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) at Cedars- Sinai Medical Center had a special term for children born under Brock's care: “Brock Babies.” This is due to the high number of neonatal skull fractures they encountered because Dr. Brock refused to use medically necessary Cesarian sections. This led to “blood-bath” deliveries, where women suffered massive hemorrhages because of vaginal birth. Not only did this put the women at higher risk of severe complications, it also endangered newborns whose skulls were compressed in the birth canal.

Cedars-Sinai Medical Center Covered up the Allegations

Multiple women have alleged that Cedars-Sinai was fully aware of the allegations and refused to do anything about their abusive physician. Instead, they covered up his crimes and did not perform official investigations, even though much of the medical staff knew about his inappropriate behavior. This has led to the medical center facing million-dollar lawsuits.

How to Get Justice for Gynecological Sexual Abuse

Women throughout California are now joining together to hold both Brock and his employer responsible for these grievous injustices. Those who Dr. Barry Brock has mistreated are urged to contact a lawyer specializing in medical malpractice who can assist them in getting compensation for the harm done.

Personal injury attorneys will review your case and identify whether you are eligible for compensation under relevant California statutes. They will gather information such as medical records, communications between you and Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, and eyewitness testimony from you and any others who were present at the time.

Additionally, these law firms will have access to resources that may be difficult to obtain for the average person. This includes working with medical experts who can provide their unbiased opinion about your injuries, the medical consequences of Brock's malpractice, and the psychological harm done by this inappropriate behavior.

Once the investigation is complete, the attorney will evaluate the case based on the damages you may be eligible for, then submit a demand letter to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center's insurance agency. They will aim for the highest possible sum through these negotiations, but if the insurance company refuses to provide a reasonable amount, they will file a lawsuit and take your case to court.

While California has recently lengthened the statute of limitations for sexual abuse cases, it's crucial that you act quickly so that attorneys can gather evidence when it is still fresh. If you believe you have been harmed by Dr. Barry Brock, or any other medical professional, contact an experienced personal injury lawyer as soon as possible.
