When doctors turn out to be abusers, it often ends in tragedy for their patients. Unfortunately, multiple gynecologists have been accused of widespread sexual abuse of their patients, who are particularly vulnerable to predatory behavior due to the sensitive nature of female reproductive health.

One of the most recent and tragic examples is Dr. Barry Brock, a former obstetrician- gynecologist (OBGYN) at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, who has been accused of abusive behavior by over 100 women. Class action lawsuits are now ongoing over the allegations, which Dr. Brock has denied.

Who is Barry Brock?

Barry Brock was a gynecologist affiliated with the Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, where he worked for 44 years. After graduating from McGill University in 1976, he was accepted into the obstetrics and gynecology residency program at the medical center, where he was then hired in 1981.

According to the lawsuits, troubling reports began to surface in the early 2000s about alleged inappropriate behavior with patients, but plaintiffs say Cedars-Sinai did not investigate and continued to stand behind its physician. Throughout the 2010s, more women came forward to complain, yet the suits allege the hospital did not perform internal investigations or take the complaints seriously.

In June 2024, the situation reached a boiling point. Patients began to openly share their horrific experiences with the physician, garnering media attention. Cedars-Sinai began a formal investigation in July 2024 and revoked his medical privileges in August 2024. According to the lawsuits, Dr. Brock contacted former patients to tell them he would be retiring — outreach the plaintiffs characterize as an attempt to discourage legal action. He was officially dismissed in September 2024 as the class action lawsuits began to pick up steam.

As of January 2025, 167 patients have filed lawsuits against Barry Brock, and it is unknown whether even more will come forward to share their stories.

Allegations Against Barry Brock

The Los Angeles Times ran an exhaustive expose on the accusations against Dr. Brock in October 2024 that went into extreme detail about the alleged misconduct, including his denials of any wrongdoing. According to the complaints, he performed unnecessary breast and cervical exams on patients while making sexually suggestive remarks, sometimes even in the presence of the patients' partners. One plaintiff alleges that he digitally penetrated her rectum while performing a Pap smear, which he has said was an accident.

Multiple women allege they were severely harmed when he placed unnecessary stitches after childbirth, allegedly stating that this would make them virgins again and satisfy their husbands. In one case, a plaintiff says she was stitched so tightly that she could not insert tampons and experienced severe pain during intercourse.

Some of the claims also involve patients' children, who plaintiffs allege were injured by negligence during childbirth.

It has been reported that the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center had a special term for children born under Brock's care: “Brock Babies.” According to those reports and the lawsuits, this stemmed from a high number of neonatal skull fractures that plaintiffs attribute to Dr. Brock allegedly declining to perform medically necessary Cesarean sections. The suits describe “blood-bath” deliveries in which women allegedly suffered massive hemorrhages from vaginal birth — deliveries the plaintiffs say put the women at higher risk of severe complications and endangered newborns whose skulls were compressed in the birth canal.

Plaintiffs Allege Cedars-Sinai Ignored the Complaints

Multiple women have alleged that Cedars-Sinai was fully aware of the complaints and refused to act on them. The lawsuits claim the hospital covered up the alleged abuse and did not perform official investigations, even though, according to the plaintiffs, much of the medical staff knew about the alleged behavior. These claims — which Cedars-Sinai has not admitted — have led to the medical center facing million-dollar lawsuits.

How to Get Justice for Gynecological Sexual Abuse

Women throughout California are now joining together to pursue claims against both Brock and his employer over the alleged conduct. Those who believe Dr. Barry Brock mistreated them can speak with a lawyer specializing in medical malpractice about whether they may be eligible for compensation.

Personal injury attorneys will review your case and identify whether you are eligible for compensation under relevant California statutes. They will gather information such as medical records, communications between you and Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, and eyewitness testimony from you and any others who were present at the time.

Additionally, these law firms will have access to resources that may be difficult to obtain for the average person. This includes working with medical experts who can provide their unbiased opinion about your injuries, the medical consequences of the alleged malpractice, and any psychological harm from the alleged behavior.

Once the investigation is complete, the attorney will evaluate the case based on the damages you may be eligible for, then submit a demand letter to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center's insurance agency. They will aim for the highest possible sum through these negotiations, but if the insurance company refuses to provide a reasonable amount, they will file a lawsuit and take your case to court.

While California has recently lengthened the statute of limitations for sexual abuse cases, acting promptly helps attorneys gather evidence while it is still fresh. If you believe you have been harmed by Dr. Barry Brock, or any other medical professional, you can speak with an experienced personal injury lawyer.
