Mitsubishi agreed to pay $8,500,000 to resolve a class action lawsuit alleging that certain Mitsubishi vehicles contain defective ZF-TRW airbag control units (ACUs). The lawsuit alleged the ACUs are vulnerable to electrical overstress, which could cause airbags and other safety features to fail to deploy during a collision.
Mitsubishi denied the allegations and any wrongdoing but agreed to the settlement to resolve the claims and avoid the cost and uncertainty of continued litigation.
You were part of the settlement class if you owned, leased, or previously owned or leased one of the following Mitsubishi Class Vehicles as of November 1, 2024:
• 2013-2017 Mitsubishi Lancer
• 2013-2015 Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution
• 2013-2015 Mitsubishi Lancer Ralliart
• 2013-2016 Mitsubishi Lancer Sportback
• 2013 Mitsubishi Outlander
To receive a settlement payment, class members had to submit a valid and timely claim form no later than May 8, 2026, online through the official settlement website or by mail. Class members who received a postcard or email notice with a Unique ID did not need to provide additional documentation. Those without a Unique ID could be required to provide supporting documents such as a vehicle title, registration, purchase agreement, lease agreement, or insurance documentation showing their name and the vehicle's VIN. A claimant who lost or never received a Unique ID had to reach the administrator through the official settlement website's contact page.
Eligible owners could receive a cash payment of up to $250 per qualifying Mitsubishi vehicle, with the potential for additional payments from unclaimed funds depending on the total volume of claims submitted and court-awarded fees and costs. Because final amounts depended on how many valid claims were filed, there was no fixed per-vehicle figure guaranteed in advance.
