What Is the MUBI Settlement About?

MUBI, Inc. — the global streaming service known for curated indie films, festival movies from Cannes and Sundance, classic cinema, and foreign films — has agreed to a $1,600,000 class action settlement. The lawsuit alleges that MUBI failed to give California consumers adequate notice that its subscriptions automatically renewed and failed to obtain sufficient consent before charging subscribers for renewal periods.

The case, Cejudo v. MUBI, Inc. (Case No. 5:25-CV-03652-BLF), is pending in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California before Judge Beth Labson Freeman. The complaint alleges that MUBI violated California's False Advertising Law and Unfair Competition Law through its automatic renewal practices. MUBI denies all allegations of wrongdoing and continues to deny any liability, but agreed to settle to avoid the cost and uncertainty of trial.

MUBI is a curated streaming service that operates differently from mainstream platforms. Rather than offering thousands of titles, MUBI traditionally featured one new hand-picked film per day, with rotating selections focused on quality over quantity. The service typically charges $10 to $15 per month and is popular with viewers who enjoy A24-style films, foreign cinema, and slow, artistic storytelling.

Who Qualifies for the MUBI Settlement?

You qualify for the MUBI class action settlement and may file a claim if you meet all of the following:

• You were residing in California;
• You signed up for a MUBI subscription on or after April 1, 2021;
• Your MUBI subscription was renewed at least once between April 1, 2021 and May 31, 2025; and
• You did not receive a refund from MUBI of all your subscription renewal charges.

Excluded from the settlement class are anyone who validly opts out, MUBI itself and its affiliates and officers, government entities, the judges and their staff, and class counsel.

Some California subscribers may have already requested a refund from MUBI's customer service after discovering an unexpected charge. If MUBI fully refunded all of your renewal charges, you are not part of the class. But if MUBI only refunded some of your charges, declined your refund request, or never responded, you remain eligible to file a claim and receive a cash payment from the settlement fund.

How Much Can You Get?

The MUBI settlement fund is $1,600,000 and is non-reversionary, meaning none of the money goes back to MUBI under any circumstances. The following amounts will be deducted before distribution to class members:

• Attorneys' fees up to 25% of the fund ($400,000);
• Reasonable litigation costs and expenses;
• Notice and settlement administration costs; and
• A service award of up to $5,000 for the class representative, subject to court approval.

After these deductions, the remaining net fund is divided equally among all class members who submit valid and timely claim forms. Each class member receives an equal share — so the more people who file, the smaller each individual award; if claim rates are low, individual awards could be substantial. You can choose to receive your payment by mailed check or electronic payment.

What Did MUBI Allegedly Do?

According to the complaint filed in the Northern District of California, MUBI failed to clearly disclose that its subscriptions automatically renewed and failed to obtain proper consent under California law before charging subscribers for renewal periods. Under California's Automatic Renewal Law (enforced through the False Advertising Law and Unfair Competition Law), companies must provide clear and conspicuous disclosure of auto-renewal terms before charging consumers, and must obtain affirmative consent.

If you noticed an unexpected MUBI charge on your credit card or bank statement during the class period and you live in California, you are likely a class member. The claim process does not require you to have proof of the charge — you simply attest under penalty of perjury that you were a California resident whose MUBI subscription was auto-renewed and that you did not receive a full refund.

Do You Need Proof?

No receipts, bank statements, or other documents are required upfront. You will, however, need to provide the identifying details tied to your MUBI account — your name and the email address associated with the subscription — so the administrator can verify you were a California subscriber during the class period. To receive a cash award, you attest under penalty of perjury that you were a California resident whose MUBI subscription was auto-renewed between April 1, 2021 and May 31, 2025 and that you did not receive a refund of all renewal charges. The information you provide on the claim form must be true and correct to the best of your knowledge.

How Were Claims Filed?

Class members could submit a claim form online at the official Settlement Website or by mailing a printable claim form to the Claims Administrator, in both cases by June 9, 2026. That deadline has now passed, and new claims are no longer being accepted.

If you filed a valid claim before the deadline, no further action is needed — the administrator (Kroll Settlement Administration) will review claims and distribute payments after the settlement receives final approval.
