What Was the Stanford Nurse Lawsuit About?
Hourly nurses alleged that Stanford Health Care failed to provide timely, duty-free meal periods, failed to pay all required meal-period premiums, issued inaccurate wage statements, and did not timely pay all wages due when employment ended. Who Was Covered?
The class covered people employed by Stanford Health Care in California as hourly operating nurses, peri-operative or post-operative nurses, or catheterization laboratory, endoscopy, interventional radiology, or procedure-room nurses between March 4, 2018 and April 13, 2024. The formal notice and payroll data controlled membership. The parties estimated a group of roughly 880 nurses, but a worker's eligibility depended on their job category, pay status, location, and dates—not simply on holding any nursing role at Stanford.How Were Payments Calculated?
Individual settlement payments were based primarily on the number of eligible workweeks in Stanford's records. A class member's workweeks were compared with total class workweeks and applied to the net settlement amount after court-approved deductions. Portions allocated as wages were subject to ordinary payroll withholding, while other portions could be reported differently. The earlier estimate of roughly $7,600 before taxes was an average, not a guaranteed check; actual amounts varied with work history and final administration.Was a Claim Form Required?
No. Class members who did nothing remained in the settlement and were scheduled to receive automatic checks after final approval. The relevant choices were whether to exclude oneself, object, or dispute the number of workweeks shown on the notice. Those deadlines passed on December 23, 2024. A nurse who missed the former workweek dispute period cannot use a generic online claim form now, and this was never a settlement where everyone needed to press a “submit claim” button.Approval and Distribution Timeline
The final approval hearing occurred on March 27, 2025, and the court entered the final approval order on April 1. The official schedule then identified May 14 as the distribution date. Checks were valid through November 11, 2025.
