What Changed Recently?

Notices began going out to class members on October 9, 2026, opening the claim period. The case is Rush et al. v. Red Coats, Inc., No. C-15-CV-26-001098, in the Circuit Court for Montgomery County, Maryland. It concerns a cyberattack on the computer systems of Red Coats, a commercial cleaning company based in the Washington, D.C. area, on or about May 26, 2025. According to the settlement notice, files accessed in the incident may have contained names, addresses, Social Security numbers and driver’s license numbers.

The plaintiffs first filed separate proposed class actions in federal court in Maryland, which were consolidated in November 2025. They voluntarily dismissed that case in January 2026 and refiled in state court in February 2026, and the settlement was filed with the court in April 2026. The lawsuit alleges that Red Coats failed to adequately protect the personal information. Red Coats denies any wrongdoing or liability, and the court has not decided who is right; the settlement is a compromise. As part of the deal, Red Coats says it has added security measures since the incident and agreed to confirm them to class counsel confidentially.

Who Qualifies?

The class is everyone who was sent written notification of the Red Coats data incident, about 35,000 people according to the settlement agreement. The only exclusions are the judge evaluating the settlement and anyone found guilty of, or pleading no contest to, causing or aiding the cyberattack. A class member who received a data incident letter from Red Coats is in the class even if they did not keep it, though filing online requires the Unique ID and PIN from the settlement notice.

How Much Can You Get?

Class members can claim credit monitoring plus one or more of the cash benefits. Each benefit has its own cap per person: The settlement does not create a fixed fund that claims are paid from. Red Coats pays approved claims, the administration costs, attorneys’ fees and costs of up to $200,000 and service awards of $1,500 to each class representative separately, so approved claims are not reduced pro rata. Payments can be made by PayPal, Venmo, Zelle, virtual prepaid card or paper check.

What Proof or Notice ID Is Required?

Filing online requires the Unique ID and PIN printed on the notice mailed to class members. The paper claim form can be downloaded from the settlement website and mailed instead. Lost-time claims need only a brief description of how the time was spent. Ordinary and extraordinary loss claims need third-party documentation such as receipts, bank statements or account records; notes or statements the class member prepares can support that documentation but are not enough on their own. Losses already reimbursed by someone else cannot be claimed.

What Is the Deadline?

Claims must be submitted online by January 7, 2027, or mailed with a postmark no later than January 7, 2027. Losses must have occurred between May 26, 2025 and January 7, 2027. The deadline to opt out or object is December 8, 2026; opt-out requests must be mailed to the administrator, and anyone who opts out cannot receive benefits.

How Do You Take Action?

Claims are filed on the official Red Coats settlement website using the Unique ID and PIN from the notice, with any supporting documents uploaded there. A printable claim form is also available on the site. A class member who has lost their Unique ID and PIN can request them from the settlement administrator through the website.

What Happens Next?

The Circuit Court for Montgomery County will hold the final approval hearing on January 4, 2027 at 10:00 a.m. Eastern Time in Rockville, Maryland, where it will also consider the requested attorneys’ fees and service awards. Red Coats can end the settlement if more than 100 class members opt out. If the court approves the settlement, credit monitoring activation codes and approved payments go out within 30 days after a claim is validated or 30 days after the settlement’s effective date, whichever is later. An appeal would delay that.

Questions

Can I get money from the Red Coats settlement without receipts?

Yes, but only for time. Class members who spent time dealing with the data incident can claim $25 an hour for up to four hours, a maximum of $100, by briefly describing what they did. There is no flat cash payment for everyone; the loss reimbursements require third-party documentation such as receipts or statements.

Is there a settlement fund that could be reduced pro rata?

No fixed fund is set out in the settlement. Red Coats pays approved claims directly, plus administration costs, court-approved attorneys' fees and costs of up to $200,000 and service awards, so those amounts are not taken out of class members' payments. Each benefit has its own cap.

What do I need to file a Red Coats claim online?

The online claim form requires the Unique ID and PIN printed on the notice mailed to class members. A paper claim form can be downloaded from the settlement website and mailed instead, postmarked by January 7, 2027. Loss claims also need supporting documents.

When will Red Coats settlement payments be made?

Not before final approval. The final approval hearing is January 4, 2027. Under the settlement agreement, approved payments are made within 30 days after a claim is validated or 30 days after the settlement's effective date, whichever is later, so any appeal would delay payments.
