Details of the Anna Jaques Hospital and Data Breach

Anna Jaques Hospital, a not-for-profit community hospital in Massachusetts with 83 beds, 200 physicians, and 1,200 staff members, suffered a ransomware attack exposing sensitive health data of over 310,000 patients. On January 19, 2024, a ransomware group began publicly extorting the hospital, threatening to release stolen data they had illegally acquired.

After the hospital administrators didn't pay off a supposed ransom to the hackers that stole patient information, the hacker group released sensitive medical and financial information of patients online, compromising patient information, exposing the hospital to liability, and patient information to malicious use.

Data Breach Risks to Anna Jaques Patients

Data breaches can also result in a long-term erosion of personal data privacy, as the hacked personally identifiable information may be traded or shared amongst cyber-criminals for years to come, on the internet, the dark web, or elsewhere.. This significantly increases the risk of further identity theft, financial fraud and massive headaches for consumers and victims.
