NYC Central Booking Settlement Reopens Claims, With a New January 7, 2027 Deadline

Published November 7, 2026

People held at a New York City Central Booking facility during the class periods have until January 7, 2027 to claim up to $475 per detention from the city’s $21.5 million settlement, after the October 19 deadline was replaced. The final approval hearing has moved from October 22 to December 16, 2026.

What Changed?

The official website for the New York City Central Booking settlement now gives January 7, 2027 as the deadline to file a claim online or by mail. The notice sent to class members had set October 19, 2026, so the claim window that appeared to close last month is open again.

The website also says the final approval hearing set for October 22, 2026 was adjourned and will not take place on that date. It has been rescheduled for December 16, 2026 at 11:00 a.m. before the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of New York in Brooklyn. The website does not explain either change, and no order describing them is posted among its documents.

Who Can Claim?

The settlement covers people detained at Brooklyn Central Booking between April 8, 2017 and December 27, 2019, and people detained at any New York City Central Booking facility between February 3, 2020 and March 1, 2023. The lawsuits concern conditions of confinement at those facilities. The City of New York has agreed to pay up to $21.5 million, and class members may receive up to $475 for each time they were held during the class period. The settlement resolves the claims without a trial.

Claims are filed on the official Central Booking settlement website or by mailing the paper form. Payment can be taken by check or electronically through PayPal, Venmo or Zelle. OCA’s NYC Central Booking settlement page has the full eligibility, payment and claim details.

What About Opt-Outs and Objections?

The original notice set October 5, 2026 for exclusions and objections. The website’s dates table now lists December 9, 2026 for both, while its written description of each still says requests must be postmarked no later than November 30, 2026. The website gives both dates and does not reconcile them.

What Happens Next?

At the December 16 hearing, the court will decide whether to approve the settlement and class counsel’s request for fees and costs, which the notice says the city pays separately from the class fund. The original notice expected payments by the end of 2026; with the hearing in mid-December, no payment date has been announced, and payments go out only after final approval and any appeals.
