Land Rover Airbag Recall: Defender, Discovery & Range Rover Driver Airbag May Not Deploy

Published July 15, 2026

If you drive a recent Defender, Discovery or Range Rover, the fix is free — but the driver's airbag could fail to deploy until a dealer completes it.

What Is Being Recalled?

Jaguar Land Rover North America, LLC is recalling about 250,857 U.S. vehicles because the driver's airbag may not deploy in a crash. The recall, filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) under campaign number 26V389000, covers three model lines: the 2020–2026 Land Rover Defender, the 2021–2026 Land Rover Discovery, and the 2022–2026 Range Rover.

According to the recall, the connector that joins the steering-wheel clockspring to the driver's airbag can develop corrosion over time. That corrosion raises the electrical resistance in the driver's airbag circuit, which can cause the airbag to fail to deploy in a collision — a serious injury risk. Jaguar Land Rover also issued a stop-sale on unsold Defender, Discovery and Range Rover units at dealers while the fix is rolled out.

The remedy is a free repair at authorized Land Rover dealers, and there is nothing for owners to buy, register, or document. Because the fix is handled entirely by the dealer, there is no online remedy portal to sign up for.

Why the Airbag Can Fail

The issue centers on a connector between the clockspring — the coiled ribbon that keeps the steering-wheel electronics connected as the wheel turns — and the driver's airbag. Over time, that connection can develop fretting corrosion, which increases electrical resistance in the airbag circuit. If resistance climbs high enough, the airbag control system may not be able to fire the driver's airbag in a crash.

There is usually a warning sign. Many affected vehicles are expected to illuminate the airbag warning light roughly 300 to 400 miles before the airbag could potentially fail to deploy. Drivers who see the airbag light should not ignore it and should contact a Land Rover dealer.

As of the recall filing, Jaguar Land Rover reported no U.S. field reports of the airbag failing to deploy and no accidents, injuries, or fires in the United States attributed to the defect.

Who Is Affected and What to Do

The recall covers roughly 97,552 Defender, 83,620 Discovery, and 69,685 Range Rover vehicles in the United States. Jaguar Land Rover is notifying owners by mail, with owner letters expected on or before August 7, 2026.

If you own one of these vehicles, you can take it to any authorized Land Rover dealer for the free repair, in which the dealer applies a protective lubricant to the driver's airbag connector terminals. You do not need to wait for your letter to schedule service, and you can confirm whether your specific vehicle is included by entering your VIN on NHTSA's recall lookup or Land Rover's recall page.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which Land Rovers are being recalled?

The recall covers about 250,857 U.S. vehicles: 2020–2026 Land Rover Defender, 2021–2026 Land Rover Discovery, and 2022–2026 Range Rover models.

What is wrong with the airbag?

The connector joining the steering-wheel clockspring to the driver's airbag can develop corrosion over time, raising electrical resistance in the airbag circuit. That can cause the driver's airbag to fail to deploy in a crash. Many affected vehicles are expected to show the airbag warning light before a potential failure.

How do I get my Land Rover fixed?

The repair is free. Land Rover dealers apply a protective lubricant to the driver's airbag connector terminals. Owners are notified by mail and should schedule the repair with an authorized Land Rover dealer. You can also check your VIN on NHTSA's recall lookup or Land Rover's recall page.

Do I need a receipt or any documentation?

No. This is a manufacturer safety recall. The repair is performed free of charge at a dealer, and there is nothing for the owner to register, submit, or document.
