Trek Bicycle Corp. recalled about 19,890 electric bicycles because the rear wheel bolts can break, allowing the rear wheel to separate from the bike and posing a fall hazard. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission published the recall (number 26-220) on January 29, 2026. The bolts were made by Trek's supplier Hyena, and Trek's notice attributes the failures to hydrogen embrittlement.
The recall covers model-year 2026 Trek FX+ 1 and FX+ 1S (in Midstep and Stepover frames) and Electra Townie Go! Step Thru and S Step Thru e-bikes, sold before October 28, 2025 at Trek and Electra dealers nationwide for about $2,100. You can identify an affected bike by the original rear wheel bolts, which are black; the replacement bolts are silver. Trek received seven reports of rear wheel bolts breaking, with no injuries reported.
If you own one of the recalled e-bikes, stop riding it and contact an authorized Trek or Electra dealer to schedule the free repair. The dealer will replace the original black rear wheel bolts with new silver ones at no charge. Trek is also giving recall participants a $10 in-store credit toward any Trek, Electra, or Bontrager merchandise, valid through December 31, 2026.
You do not need a receipt, proof of purchase, or registration to get the repair. Trek is contacting known registered owners directly, but you can also start the process from Trek's official safety-recalls page. For the full remedy details, use the official recall notice linked below rather than any third-party site.
No. This is a product-safety recall, not a lawsuit or settlement. There is no claim form and no payout beyond the free repair and the $10 store credit described above.
