The case, Paciucci et al. v. FCA Canada Inc., was authorized as a class action by the Superior Court of Quebec on April 29, 2024. The lawsuit alleged that the door handles and door locking mechanisms of 2012–2019 Fiat 500 vehicles have a defect that causes the handles to jam and, in some cases, break or detach from the car. FCA Canada denies any wrongdoing, no court has found that it did anything wrong, and the settlement was reached without any admission of liability.
Justice Pierre Nollet approved the settlement and its distribution protocol on February 25, 2026, after a February 16, 2026 approval hearing. The court-approved notice of the approved settlement then opened the extended warranty program on June 11, 2026, which also started the one-year window for reimbursement claims.
The class covers everyone who purchased or leased a Fiat 500 from model years 2012 through 2019, with any trim line, in Quebec. The settlement's two benefits have different eligibility tests:
- The free repair program is available to class members whose vehicle shows the door handle problem when inspected at an FCA dealership during the coverage period.
- Reimbursement is available to class members who already paid out of pocket to repair or replace a door handle or the related locking mechanism because of the problem, and who have not already been reimbursed by FCA.
A class member can use both. Applying for one does not affect the right to apply for the other.
There is no settlement fund to divide. FCA pays the benefits directly, and the amounts are not capped:
- Reimbursement of past repairs. FCA reimburses the cost of parts, labour and taxes for door handle repairs or replacements caused by the problem, wherever the work was done. There is no maximum per repair and no limit on the number of repairs or replacement handles claimed.
- Free repairs going forward. FCA dealers repair or replace affected door handles at no charge for ten years from the vehicle's in-service date, or until June 11, 2027 for a car already more than ten years past its in-service date when the notices went out. There is no limit on the number of repair claims during the coverage period, but preventive inspections and repairs are not covered.
Each reimbursement paid to a class member is reduced by the percentage Quebec law directs to the Fonds d'aide aux actions collectives: 2% for claims under $2,000, 5% for claims from $2,000 to $5,000 and 10% for claims over $5,000. Class counsel fees and administration costs are paid by FCA separately and are not deducted from class members' reimbursements.
No notice ID or administrator-issued code is needed to file, but a reimbursement claim does require documentation. The claim form asks for:
- the vehicle's 17-character VIN and model year;
- current contact information, with the email address and phone number verified on submission;
- the approximate month and year the door handle problem first occurred;
- documents showing both that a repair was done to fix the door handle problem and that the claimant paid for it, such as invoices, receipts or work orders;
- a sworn statement that FCA has not already reimbursed those costs.
A claimant missing the documents can ask the claims administrator to check FCA's records and FCA dealership records for the repair, or to put the claim on hold for up to 30 days while the documents are gathered. Claimants without documents provide the repair location, the approximate date of the repair and which door handle was affected. Repairs done outside an FCA dealership qualify as long as the supporting documentation is provided.
Reimbursement claims must be submitted by June 11, 2027 at 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time. Free dealer repairs follow the separate coverage period described above: ten years from the in-service date, or until June 11, 2027 for older vehicles. A deficient claim gets 30 days to be corrected after the administrator's notice.
Reimbursement claims are filed online through the Fiat 500 door handles settlement claim page, which also lets claimants upload documents or a VIN later if the administrator asks for them. A paper claim form can be downloaded from the settlement website and mailed instead.
For a repair under the warranty program, the owner books an inspection at an FCA dealership in Quebec; the settlement website lists the dealers. Owners whose nearest FCA dealership is more than 150 km away may use a third-party shop within 150 km of home, but only after getting the claims administrator's approval first, through the contact options on the official settlement website.
The claim period runs until June 11, 2027. After it ends, Concilia pays approved claims by Interac e-Transfer or by cheque, depending on the method chosen on the claim form. The claim form states that Interac e-Transfers expire after 30 days and cheques after six months, and neither is reissued. No payment date had been announced as of October 3, 2026.
Is there a cap on how much can be reimbursed for past door handle repairs?
No. The settlement sets no maximum per repair and no limit on the number of repairs or replacement handles a class member can claim. Approved amounts cover parts, labour and taxes, minus the percentage Quebec law directs to the Fonds d'aide aux actions collectives: 2% of claims under $2,000, 5% between $2,000 and $5,000, and 10% over $5,000.
What if the repair invoice has been lost?
The claim form lets a claimant ask Concilia to check whether FCA's records or an FCA dealership's records show the repair, or to put the claim on hold for up to 30 days while the claimant tracks down the documents. A claimant without documents provides the repair location, the approximate month and year of the repair, and which door handle was fixed.
How long does the free door handle repair coverage last?
Coverage runs for ten years from the vehicle's in-service date. For a Fiat 500 that was already more than ten years past its in-service date when the approval notices went out, coverage runs until June 11, 2027. The program repairs handles that show the problem at inspection and does not pay for preventive repairs.
Do class counsel fees reduce what class members receive?
No. According to the approval judgment, FCA pays the court-approved class counsel fees of $425,000 CAD plus taxes and $3,500 CAD in disbursements, along with Concilia's administration and notice costs, on top of the warranty program and reimbursements.
