Cash Payment: $75 flat (no proof needed) + up to $1,000 out-of-pocket + up to $5,000 for identity theft losses
Credit Monitoring: 1 year, all 3 bureaus, with $1 million identity theft insurance
Claim Deadline: February 28, 2026
If your personal information was exposed in the December 2023 Idaho National Laboratory cyberattack, a class action settlement is offering cash payments and credit monitoring. The $75 flat cash payment requires no proof, and you can claim up to $5,000 more if you suffered identity theft or fraud because of the breach.
You must file a claim to get paid. If you do nothing, you get nothing. The deadline is February 28, 2026.
What Happened?
In December 2023, hackers launched a targeted cyberattack on the computer systems of Idaho National Laboratory (INL). The attackers gained unauthorized access and obtained files containing the personal information of individuals connected to the lab. The breach was publicly disclosed on or about December 12, 2023.
The compromised files may have contained full names, Social Security numbers, dates of birth, and medical treatment and health insurance information.
What Is Idaho National Laboratory?
Idaho National Laboratory is one of the United States' premier national laboratories, operated by Battelle Energy Alliance, LLC for the Department of Energy. Located in eastern Idaho, INL conducts nuclear energy research, national security programs, and other scientific work. Because of the nature of its operations, INL maintains detailed records on employees, contractors, researchers, and other people connected to the lab — which is why the breach potentially exposed sensitive personal information including Social Security numbers and medical data even for people who may not think of themselves as "customers" of INL in the traditional sense.
Who Qualifies?
You qualify if you are a U.S. resident whose private information was compromised in the December 2023 INL data incident. If you received a postcard or notice about this settlement, you are a confirmed class member.
There are two levels of benefits depending on whether your Social Security number was specifically compromised:
All class members (regardless of SSN status) can claim 1 year of credit monitoring.
Class members whose SSNs were compromised can also claim cash payments. If you received a postcard about this settlement, it should indicate whether your SSN was included. If you're not sure, contact the settlement administrator.
What Can You Get?
$75 Flat Cash Payment (no proof needed). If your SSN was compromised, you can claim a flat $75 payment with no documentation required. Just file the claim form.
Up to $1,000 for Out-of-Pocket Expenses. If you spent money dealing with the breach, you can claim up to $1,000 for documented expenses like credit monitoring fees, credit report fees, credit freeze and unfreeze costs, ID replacement costs, and postage for contacting banks by mail. You need receipts or other proof showing the expenses were related to the breach. Expenses must have occurred between December 12, 2023 and February 28, 2026. You cannot claim expenses already reimbursed by a third party. Personal notes alone are not enough — they can support other proof but can't be the only documentation.
Up to $5,000 for Identity Theft or Fraud Losses. If you lost money because of identity theft or fraud that was probably caused by the breach, you can claim up to $5,000. You need to show that the losses were likely connected to the data incident, that they aren't already covered by your out-of-pocket expenses claim, and that you tried to prevent the loss or recover the money (including using any insurance you already had). Losses must have occurred between December 12, 2023 and February 28, 2026. Same documentation rules apply — receipts and proof required, personal notes alone are not sufficient.
1 Year of Credit Monitoring (all class members). Regardless of whether your SSN was compromised, all class members can enroll in one year of credit monitoring by all three credit bureaus. This includes real-time credit file monitoring, dark web scanning, comprehensive public records monitoring, access to a fraud resolution agent, and up to $1 million in identity theft insurance.
You Must File a Claim
This is important: unlike many data breach settlements, doing nothing here gets you nothing. You must submit a claim form to receive any benefits — including the $75 flat payment and the credit monitoring.
The fastest way to file is online at INLDataSettlement.com. You can also download a printable claim form from the website and mail it. The deadline is February 28, 2026 (online submission or postmark date).

Attorneys' Fees
Class Counsel will request $175,000 in attorneys' fees and litigation costs. A service award of $5,000 is being requested for class representative Jason Dallimore. Both amounts are paid by INL and do not come from a settlement fund that would otherwise go to class members.
What Happens If I Do Nothing?
If you do nothing, you receive no benefits and no payments. You also give up the right to sue INL over the data breach. This is different from many settlements where doing nothing still gets you an automatic payment. Here, you must file a claim.
