University of Phoenix FTC Refunds: Zelle Payments Sent to Eligible Students

Published August 11, 2026

A University of Phoenix Zelle deposit in 2026 is a reissued FTC settlement refund. It is separate from federal borrower-defense loan relief and does not open a new cash claim.

What Was Announced?

The Federal Trade Commission says it is sending Zelle payments in July 2026 to eligible people who paid the University of Phoenix. This round is for people who did not cash a prior check or accept a prior PayPal refund.

The agency’s March 2021, July 2023 and September 2025 rounds produced more than $49 million in completed refunds. The new Zelle deposits use those existing program records, so there is no new application for the cash distribution.

What Was the University of Phoenix Settlement About?

The FTC alleged that University of Phoenix advertising falsely suggested the school worked with major employers to create job opportunities for students and shaped its curriculum around those companies’ hiring needs.

A 2019 settlement was valued at $191 million: $50 million was designated for payments and $141 million for cancellation of certain debts owed directly to the school. The current Zelle round concerns the FTC refund side of that resolution.

How the Zelle Reissue Works

The FTC says an eligible payment is deposited into the recipient’s bank account with a settlement note. It is intended for a person whose earlier check was not cashed or whose PayPal payment was not accepted.

No one needs to pay a processing charge or provide a banking password to unlock the deposit. Save the transaction record, and use the official FTC program page below if you need to confirm the payment’s origin.

FTC Refund vs. Borrower Defense

A settlement refund and federal student-loan relief are different remedies. The FTC’s current page says receiving money from the settlement does not prevent an eligible borrower from applying for borrower defense and should not affect a pending application.

The Department of Education, not the refund administrator, makes borrower-defense decisions. OCA’s borrower-defense settlement coverage explains a separate court case involving delayed federal applications; it is not the source of the University of Phoenix Zelle payment.

What If You Attended but Received Nothing?

Attendance by itself does not establish eligibility for this refund round. The FTC selected people from its existing distribution records, and the present page offers no new cash claim form.

For loan-relief questions, use the Department of Education’s official borrower-defense resources. For the cash payment history, rely on the FTC program page and avoid services promising guaranteed access for a fee.
