SportsEdTV Video Privacy (VPPA) Class Action Settlement
PublishedJuly 15, 2026
If you got a notice with a Login ID and PIN because you watched videos on SportsEdTV, you are one of just 1,264 people in this settlement class — a small class means a claim can be worth filing, and California residents get double.
SportsEdTV agreed to a $500,000 settlement over allegations it shared subscribers' video-viewing data with third parties. The case is Balestrieri v. SportsEdTV, Inc. in the Northern District of California.
SportsEdTV, Inc. agreed to a $500,000 class action settlement to resolve allegations that it disclosed subscribers’ personally identifiable video-viewing information to third parties without consent. The lawsuit, Balestrieri v. SportsEdTV, Inc., alleges violations of the federal Video Privacy Protection Act (VPPA), 18 U.S.C. § 2710, and the California Invasion of Privacy Act (CIPA), Cal. Penal Code § 631. According to the complaint, when a subscriber watched videos on the SportsEdTV website while logged into Facebook, the Facebook Pixel allegedly transmitted the person’s Facebook ID and the titles of the videos they watched to Meta without consent.
SportsEdTV denies that it violated any law, and the Court has not decided who is right. The parties agreed to settle to avoid the cost and uncertainty of continued litigation. As part of the settlement, SportsEdTV says it has deactivated the Facebook Pixel on its website and has agreed to otherwise stop sharing customer transaction data with third parties except as permitted by the VPPA and California law. The case is before Magistrate Judge Sallie Kim in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California, Case No. 3:25-cv-04046-SK.

Who Qualifies?
The Settlement Class is defined as SportsEdTV’s 1,264 subscribers who reside in the United States and whom SportsEdTV has identified through its records as having watched videos on its website during the period of May 9, 2023 to May 16, 2025. This is a closed, fixed list — not the general public — so the people who received a notice with a Login ID and PIN are the class.
Excluded from the class are the judges presiding over the case and their families; SportsEdTV and its officers, directors, attorneys, and employees; anyone who timely excludes themselves; and the legal representatives, successors, or assigns of any excluded person.
How Much Can You Get?
SportsEdTV agreed to create a $500,000 settlement fund. Class member payments, settlement administration and notice costs, attorneys’ fees and costs, and a class representative incentive award all come out of that fund. Each class member who files a valid claim receives a proportionate (pro rata) share of what remains.
Two things shape the amount. First, because the class is small — 1,264 people — the per-person share can be more substantial than in a settlement with millions of class members, though the final figure depends on how many valid claims are filed. Second, California residents receive twice the pro rata share, because of the additional claim brought under California law. The exact payment is set after the claims process closes.
How to File a Claim
To receive a payment, you must submit a claim form by September 10, 2026. You can file online through the official settlement website, or download a paper claim form and mail it (postmarked by September 10, 2026).
To file online, you log in with the Login ID and PIN printed on the notice that was sent to you. Because the class is a fixed list of identified subscribers, that identifier is how the administrator confirms you belong to the class — you do not need receipts or screenshots. If you cannot locate your Login ID and PIN, request them through the contact options on the official settlement website. California residents also complete a short attestation, under penalty of perjury, confirming they lived in California when they used the site.
On the claim form you can choose how to be paid: by check (the default) or by Venmo, Zelle, or PayPal.
Key Dates
• Claim form deadline: September 10, 2026 (online or postmarked)
• Exclusion (opt-out) deadline: September 25, 2026
• Objection deadline: September 25, 2026
• Final approval hearing: February 8, 2027 at 9:30 a.m. (virtual)
When Would You Be Paid?
The Court will hold a final approval hearing on February 8, 2027 to decide whether the settlement is fair, reasonable, and adequate. If the Court approves the settlement and it becomes final, approved claimants are paid about 15 days after final approval. Hearing dates can move, so it is worth checking the official settlement website for updates.
Payments are issued by check unless you elect Venmo, Zelle, or PayPal on the claim form. One practical note: checks expire and become void 90 days after they are issued, so cash or deposit a check promptly.
What Are VPPA and CIPA?
The VPPA is the federal Video Privacy Protection Act. It restricts how a “video tape service provider” can disclose information identifying a person as having requested or watched specific video materials, and it has been applied to modern streaming and website video. CIPA is the California Invasion of Privacy Act, a state privacy statute. This lawsuit alleges that tracking technology on the SportsEdTV website shared video-viewing information without consent in violation of both. SportsEdTV denies wrongdoing, and the Court has not ruled on the merits. For background, see OCA’s VPPA glossary explainer and its CIPA explainer. This is one of a wave of VPPA video-privacy cases; a closely related one is the Willow TV VPPA settlement.

Who qualifies for the SportsEdTV settlement?
