American Financial Benefits Center Refunds: New Zelle Payments for Student Debt Relief Customers

Published August 11, 2026

The June 2026 AFBC payment is a Zelle reissue for people already identified in the FTC program. It does not change a federal student-loan balance or create a new debt-relief claim.

What Was Announced?

The Federal Trade Commission says eligible customers of American Financial Benefits Center are receiving refund payments through Zelle in June 2026. The distribution concerns fees paid for student-loan debt-relief services.

The current Zelle group consists of people who did not cash an earlier check or accept an earlier PayPal payment. The August 2023 and January 2025 rounds resulted in more than $8.9 million in completed refunds, and no new claim form is available for this reissue.

What Was the AFBC Case About?

The FTC and Department of Justice sued American Financial Benefits Center, related companies and operator Brandon Frere in 2018. The government alleged that the operation falsely suggested an affiliation with the U.S. Department of Education.

According to the agencies, customers were charged illegal upfront fees of as much as $800 and recurring monthly fees of $45 to $99. The enforcement outcomes included debt-relief industry restrictions, criminal consequences for Frere and money for refunds.

How the Zelle Reissue Works

The FTC says the payment appears as a direct bank deposit with a settlement note. It is meant to complete a refund that an eligible recipient did not previously collect by check or PayPal.

The payment is not a loan discharge and does not require the recipient to hire another debt-relief company. It also does not require an advance fee, banking password or transfer back to a sender.

What About Your Student Loan Account?

A cash refund from the FTC and the status of a federal or private student loan are separate. The FTC directs borrowers to their loan servicer or official Department of Education resources for current balance and repayment information.

OCA’s borrower-defense case coverage concerns delayed federal relief applications and is not the source of the AFBC payment. Do not treat a refund deposit as proof that a loan was forgiven.

What If You Paid AFBC but Got No Zelle Deposit?

The FTC’s current page does not say every customer will be paid in this round. Eligibility comes from the prior refund records, specifically people who did not complete an earlier payment.

Do not pay a recovery company for promised access. Verify updates only through the official program page and preserve suspicious messages if someone impersonates the FTC.
